Roy Keane: Kobbie Mainoo May Need to Leave Manchester United
Roy Keane has suggested that Kobbie Mainoo might have to consider leaving Manchester United if he continues to be overlooked by new manager Ruben Amorim.
Mainoo was left on the bench for United’s Super Sunday clash against Liverpool, even though Casemiro started despite having just returned from Brazil duty after two games and a long trip from South Korea.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Keane said, “It obviously seems to be a problem for Mainoo getting into this team. The word coming out is they don’t think he can cover the ground that quickly, but if you look at Man United’s other midfielders, they’re not great at that either.”
The former United captain urged Mainoo to stay patient and keep working hard, saying, “As a young player, he has to suck that up and work hard. And when he gets a chance, he has to take it.”
Keane added that Mainoo must prove himself to the new boss: “A young player with good potential cannot be guaranteed a place in United’s team. But it will come down to the player himself. Your job every day, every week, is to make sure the manager puts you in the team.”
He also warned that Amorim’s preference could determine Mainoo’s future. “If the manager deep down doesn’t fancy him? I don’t know. We’ll find that out in the next few weeks. Because if he doesn’t fancy him, he might have to move him on.”
Despite acknowledging Mainoo’s talent and early success, Keane said the midfielder still has more to prove: “He got some plaudits when he first came in, he was involved in the England squad. He has to get back to that. He’s had opportunities recently, and when he’s come on, he just looks a bit short for me. I wouldn’t be scratching my head thinking: why is he not in the team? I can see why he’s not being picked at the moment.”
Jurgen Klopp: Why I Turned Down Manchester United Job
Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he turned down an offer to manage Manchester United in 2013, saying the club’s vision was “not for me” after hearing things in talks that he “didn’t like.”
Speaking on The Diary of a CEO podcast, the former Liverpool boss said, “Yes, I spoke to them [Manchester United]. In the year when Sir Alex Ferguson retired they spoke to me. Of course they were interested.”
Klopp admitted he was flattered by United’s approach, saying, “At that time I would have been interested. I was young, I had a sensational team at Dortmund, my God. They probably thought ‘what is he doing there?’” But he ultimately declined, explaining that “It was the wrong time, wrong moment. I had a contract at Dortmund and wouldn’t have left, not really for nobody at that time.”
The German coach hinted that United’s transfer-focused philosophy put him off, recalling, “The people in that conversation told me [things] which I didn’t like. United was that big – ‘we get all the players we want. We get him, we get him, we get him, we get him,’ and I was sitting there … It was not my project.”
He added that he wasn’t interested in rebuilding the team by bringing back former players. “I didn’t want to bring back, I don’t know, Pogba. Paul is a sensational player, my God, but these things don’t work usually. Or Cristiano, my God, we all know together with Messi he is the best player in the world but bringing back never helps.”

His appointment follows the departure of Jon Dahl Tomasson, who was dismissed last week after collecting just one point from Sweden’s opening four World Cup qualifying matches.
The poor start left Sweden in a difficult position in their group, prompting the federation to act quickly in search of a turnaround.
Potter officially assumes his new role today under a short-term agreement that covers the remainder of the qualifying campaign.
The contract includes matches against Switzerland and Slovenia in November and could extend to a potential playoff in March.
Should Sweden qualify for the World Cup, the deal will automatically be renewed to keep Potter in charge through the tournament.
"Together with the players, I want to realise the fans' dream of a championship summer," says Potter. "I am very humbled by the assignment, but also incredibly inspired. Sweden has fantastic players who deliver in the world's best leagues during the weeks. My job will be to create the conditions so that we as a team deliver at the highest level to take Sweden to the World Cup next summer.”
