Kenya’s fast-rising forward Ryan Ogam has his eyes firmly set on making a seamless adjustment to life in Austria after sealing a move to Bundesliga outfitWolfsberger AC.
At just 21, Ogam understands that blending into a new culture is just as important as performing on the pitch, which is why he has already committed to learning the local language.
“I have the right mindset to settle in very fast. I have already scheduled lessons to learn German for smooth communication, but above all, it is about mentality. I am ready for the challenge,” he told Citizen TV.
The deal, finalized on September 1, represents the latest step in a rapid climb that began only last year when Ogam featured for Tusker FC in the FKF Premier League. Remarkably, it was his first season playing as a natural striker, having previously been deployed in defensive midfield roles with Rainbow FC.
His transformation into a prolific forward quickly translated onto the international stage. Ogam was Kenya’s joint top scorer at the CHAN tournament with two goals, helping Harambee Stars reach the last eight.
He followed that up with three strikes in World Cup qualifiers against The Gambia and Seychelles, instantly raising his profile as one of the country’s brightest attacking talents.
Choosing Wolfsberger over other suitors, the forward signed a long-term contract and immediately outlined his ambitions. With 19 matches still to be played in the league, he has already set a personal target.
“My target is to score 10 or more goals this season. I want to start my career in Austria on a high, and I am excited to give everything for my new club,” he added.
Beyond personal drive, Ogam has not forgotten the role others have played in his growth. He singled out Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy, crediting the South African legend for refining his game.
“What Mariga and Hussein did by bringing in McCarthy was the best decision. Benni is the greatest coach I’ve worked under. Every training session improves me, from my movements to the instructions he gives. I’m extremely grateful to him,” he said.
