Yoane Wissa, the dynamic DR Congo international striker, has made a public and emphatic appeal to Brentford to allow him to depart in the closing hours of the summer transfer window. In a statement that has grabbed headlines across the Premier League, Wissa accused Brentford of reneging on a prior agreement that, he says, permitted him to leave the club if a reasonable offer arrived.
Wissa’s announcement comes as Newcastle United intensify their pursuit of the 28-year-old forward. The Magpies have reportedly made several bids this summer—one valued at £35 million plus £5 million in add-ons, another rising to £40 million, and even a recent proposal of £45 million—only to be rebuffed by Brentford, who are said to be pushing for a valuation closer to £60 million.
Wissa claims that, earlier this summer, senior club figures, including the new head coach, formally guaranteed both verbally and in writing that a fair offer would secure his release, a promise he asserts has now been broken.
In a heartfelt message, he wrote: “I have always given 100 per cent for Brentford since the day I signed back in 2021…During these conversations, it was confirmed to me and my representatives that the club would not stand in my way if a reasonable offer was received. This was also put in writing.”
While the statement expressed pride in his 149 appearances and 49 goals for the club, it also conveyed his mounting frustration: “The club has now significantly changed its position…this has left me in a difficult and frustrating position” and he insisted that Brentford “honour their word and let me move on.”
Reports confirm that Wissa has since taken a stand—refusing to train or play for Brentford’s first team, unfollowing the club on social media, and removing all club-related content from his accounts—underscoring the seriousness of his intent.
Wissa joined Brentford in 2021 from Lorient, initially signing on for approximately £8.5 million. Since then, he’s become a key asset, evolving into a vital attacking weapon. Over four seasons, Wissa has scored 45 goals in 137 Premier League appearances, with 20 goals in the 2024–25 campaign making him one of the division’s most consistent scorers.
His relationship with the club and its fans appeared to be grounded in mutual appreciation. He praised Brentford supporters in his statement, describing his time at the club as a privilege and expressing genuine sadness at the current impasse: “It saddens me to have to write that, and I maintain total respect for the club and its fans…Being made to stay beyond this summer will only tarnish four wonderful years.”
However, behind this camaraderie lies a contract with a January 2026 expiration—and an option for an extension to 2027. For Wissa, the allure of a move to Newcastle is tied to Premier League ambition and the desire to take the next step in a career that has already seen steady progression.
Newcastle United, who have bolstered their squad by signing German forward Nick Woltemade for around £70 million, are keen to add another striker to complement his style. Wissa is seen as an ideal companion—offering pace, pressing ability, and a different attacking profile from his compatriot.
Yet the Tyneside club’s ambitions are tangled with their own outgoing star. Alexander Isak remains a target for Liverpool, and his potential departure hinges on Newcastle securing two forward signings—making this Wissa impasse particularly critical for all parties involved.
