Sevilla FC has secured the services of Greek international goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos on a season-long loan from Newcastle United. The 31-year-old shot-stopper arrives at the Andalusian club with the aim of revitalising his career and contributing to Sevilla’s aspirations in La Liga and European competitions.

Vlachodimos’ move to Sevilla marks a significant step in his career, following a series of transitions across various European leagues.

Born in Stuttgart, Germany, to Greek parents, he began his football journey at VfB Stuttgart before making a name for himself at Panathinaikos in Greece. His impressive performances led to a move to Benfica, where he established himself as a reliable first-choice goalkeeper.

In 2023, he ventured into the Premier League with Nottingham Forest, and a year later, he joined Newcastle United for a reported fee of £20 million, making him the most expensive goalkeeper in the club’s history.

However, his time at Newcastle was limited, with Vlachodimos making only a single appearance in the 2024–25 season during a Carabao Cup match against AFC Wimbledon.

The lack of regular first-team opportunities at Newcastle prompted Vlachodimos to seek a loan move to Sevilla, where he aims to regain his starting role and enhance his prospects ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Sevilla, on the other hand, was in search of an experienced goalkeeper to bolster their squad following the departure of several key players. The club’s sporting director identified Vlachodimos as a suitable candidate to provide competition and depth in the goalkeeping department.

Upon his arrival in Seville, Vlachodimos expressed his enthusiasm about the move, stating, “I’m happy to be here. It was like a rollercoaster of waiting. I couldn’t wait to come, and finally, we made it. I’m very happy to be here, and I look forward to meeting my teammates, staff, and coaching staff. I can’t wait to start.”

The goalkeeper also conveyed his ambition to contribute to Sevilla’s resurgence, saying, “I would like to push Sevilla upwards again to play in European football. I believe that Sevilla, with all its history as a powerhouse with seven Europa League titles, needs to get back up again in La Liga, and I look forward to helping and doing everything possible to bring the club back to where it belongs.”

Sevilla’s decision to bring in Vlachodimos is seen as a strategic move to strengthen their squad depth and enhance competition within the team.

The club’s management is optimistic that the experienced goalkeeper will bring stability and reliability to the backline, qualities that are essential for competing at the highest levels of Spanish and European football.
