Harambee Stars captain Aboud Omar has echoed coach Benni McCarthy’s praise for Manzur Okwaro’s adaptability and influence during the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024).
Manzur Okwaro has been pivotal for Harambee Stars in their three outings so far — from their 1-0 triumph over DR Congo, the 1-1 stalemate with Angola, to their latest 1-0 success against Morocco.
Though primarily a defender, the 20-year-old has been deployed in midfield by Benni McCarthy in every match, demonstrating impressive versatility that has not gone unnoticed by Aboud Omar.
After the hard-fought win over Morocco on Sunday, August 10, at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, the Kenya Police FC defender emphasized the value Manzur brings to the team.
“He is exceptionally talented and can adapt to any position, which makes him a unique asset,” Aboud Omar said.
He added that Okwaro deserves protection and careful nurturing, as he embodies the promise of Kenyan football’s future.
“One word to describe Manzur is that he is energetic…that young man has a lot of energy, big up to him. He has gotten this golden opportunity, he plays as a centerback, sometimes he plays as a leftback, and now he is in the midfield, and he has taken that position,” Omar explained.
“He is a utility in our squad, and as a team, we are happy to have a player like him because in case there is a challenge anywhere, he can fit in. I believe if Ryan could have run out of gas, he would have played well as a striker. We are lucky to have him, and we shall just do our best to support him.”
Coach Benni McCarthy has also been outspoken about Manzur’s flexibility, revealing that the tactical switch in the game against DR Congo was deliberate.
“DR Congo wanted to build around their big No.9. I needed someone strong, quick, and clever to break that supply chain. Manzur did exactly that.
“He’s physically strong, very good technically, and plays with such fearlessness. That’s the kind of bravery we needed,” McCarthy said.
