Brazilian forward Endrick has been officially assigned the coveted No. 9 shirt for the 2025–26 season. This decision marks a pivotal moment in the teenager’s burgeoning career and reflects the club’s confidence in his potential.
The No. 9 jersey, previously worn by Kylian Mbappé, became available following the French star’s decision to adopt the No. 10 shirt, which had been vacated by Luka Modrić.
Initially, there was speculation that academy graduate Gonzalo García might inherit the iconic number after his impressive performances, including winning the Golden Boot at the FIFA Club World Cup. However, Real Madrid has opted to bestow the No. 9 upon Endrick, signaling a clear endorsement of his role in the first team.
Endrick’s journey to this point has been remarkable. Born in Taguatinga, Brazil, he joined Palmeiras’ youth ranks at the age of 11. His exceptional talent was evident early on, and by 16, he had made his professional debut for the senior team, becoming the youngest player to do so in the club’s history.
His performances caught the attention of European giants, leading to Real Madrid securing his services in December 2022, with the move materializing in July 2024 when he turned 18.
In his debut season with Madrid, Endrick showcased his potential, scoring seven goals in 843 minutes of play. Despite limited game time, his contributions were noteworthy, and he demonstrated a strong desire to succeed at the club. Reports indicate that he rejected loan offers, choosing instead to remain at Madrid and fight for his place in the team.
The decision to assign Endrick the No. 9 shirt is seen as a gesture of trust from the club’s management. It not only provides him with a prominent role but also places him in the lineage of legendary forwards who have donned the number, such as Ronaldo Nazário and Raúl González.
Gonzalo García, who had been a strong contender for the No. 9 jersey, will now wear No. 16. His contract renewal until 2030 reflects the club’s belief in his abilities and future prospects.
