Sunderland Football Club have finalized the loan signing of 19‑year‑old Spanish striker Marc Guiu from Chelsea.
The loan will last for the full campaign, with Sunderland set to cover his full salary and no option to buy included in the agreement.
Marc Guiu, born in Granollers, Spain on 4 January 2006, emerged from Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy.
He made an unforgettable senior debut in October 2023 by scoring within 23 seconds of his first touch in La Liga—becoming the youngest Barcelona player ever to score on debut in the competition.
His breakthrough under manager Xavi brought comparisons to elite finishers. Xavi remarked that he saw “a leader” in the young forward and was impressed by his courage and qualities in training.
Chelsea secured his services in July 2024 by triggering a £5 million release clause. Guiu signed a five‑year contract with the club and featured in 16 senior matches during his debut season.
He scored six goals—all in the UEFA Europa Conference League, including a hat‑trick against Shamrock Rovers—and contributed to Chelsea’s title triumph in that competition.
He also took part in Chelsea’s victorious FIFA Club World Cup campaign in the summer of 2025.
Despite his promise, Guiu found opportunities limited in Premier League fixtures under manager Enzo Maresca, making only a handful of appearances.
Nevertheless, Maresca remained supportive, stating: “Marc is improving a lot… Day after day he is more ready for that kind of game.”
Chelsea’s belief in his potential was further emphasized by the decision to loan him rather than sell, ensuring they retain him within their long‑term plans.
Sunderland, newly promoted after clinching the Championship play‑off final, have wasted no time rebuilding their squad.
Under manager Régis Le Bris, the club has already completed seven major signings, including midfield stalwart Granit Xhaka, young creative talent Enzo Le Fée, and Ivorian winger Simon Adingra.
Guiu becomes their ninth summer recruit, adding a dynamic centre‑forward presence suited to their tactical approach
Moreover, it has been reported that the agreement includes a performance‑related clause; if Sunderland fail to guarantee Guiu sufficient playing time, they could incur a financial penalty toward Chelsea.
It was reported that the striker’s scheduled flight to the North East experienced a delay, temporarily postponing his medical.
Nonetheless, both clubs expect the move to proceed, with the loan set to be finalized shortly.
Speaking publicly upon confirmation of the deal, Marc Guiu said: “I’m feeling great and really looking forward to the season ahead. I see myself as a powerful striker, who can make a difference on and off the ball, and I pride myself on being a natural goalscorer. This year is a huge opportunity for me to help take this team where it truly deserves to be, and I can’t wait to get started.”
From Sunderland’s perspective, the arrival of Guiu shifts dynamics in the striking department. Wilson Isidor, who finished last season as their top scorer in the Championship with 12 goals, may see reduced central starts.
Guiu’s box‑poaching efficiency and aerial strength offer a contrasting but complementary profile. Meanwhile, Eliezer Mayenda, another young forward in the squad, will face fresh competition for minutes up front.
