In a dramatic La Liga encounter at the Estadio Coliseum, Getafe pulled off a stunning 2-1 upset against second-placed Atlético Madrid on Sunday, March 9, 2025. Mauro Arambarri’s last-gasp brace turned the game on its head, handing Diego Simeone’s side a costly defeat and squandering their chance to climb to the top of the league standings.

The match, part of La Liga’s Matchday 27, showcased a tightly contested battle between the two sides. Atlético Madrid, riding high with 56 points and sitting in second place, entered the game as favorites against a Getafe team languishing in 14th with 30 points. However, the home side’s resilience and late heroics proved decisive.

The opening 45 minutes saw both teams struggle to break the deadlock. Atlético controlled possession but failed to create clear-cut chances against Getafe’s compact defense. Getafe goalkeeper David Soria was rarely tested, while Atlético’s Jan Oblak was equally untroubled at the other end. The physicality of the game was evident early on, with yellow cards shown to Atlético’s Robin Le Normand and Getafe’s Domingos Duarte and Alderete before halftime.

The game sprang to life in the second half. Atlético substitute Thomas Lemar replaced Nahuel Molina in the 66th minute, signaling Simeone’s intent to push for a breakthrough. Their persistence paid off in the 75th minute when Alexander Sørloth converted a penalty, giving Atlético a 1-0 lead. The Norwegian striker’s cool finish from the spot seemed to set the stage for a routine victory.

However, the tide turned dramatically in the 80th minute when Atlético’s Angel Correa was sent off for a studs-up tackle, reducing the visitors to 10 men. Getafe capitalized on their numerical advantage, piling pressure on Atlético’s defense. In the 89th minute, Mauro Arambarri equalized with a well-taken strike, igniting the home crowd and setting the stage for a frantic finish.

Just as extra time loomed, Arambarri struck again in stoppage time, scoring a sensational goal to complete his quickfire double and secure a 2-1 victory for Getafe. The midfielder’s late heroics left Atlético stunned and handed them their first loss in 24 competitive meetings against Getafe.

Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone expressed his frustration after the match. “It was a bad performance by us today,” he said in a post-match interview with Reuters. “We had the chance to manage the end better, but it can happen—it’s football. I don’t think it was a matter of attitude; the mental side was okay, but we didn’t play well.” The defeat comes at a critical juncture for Atlético, who face rivals Real Madrid in the Champions League Round of 16 second leg on Wednesday, followed by a league clash against Barcelona next Sunday.

The result keeps Barcelona atop the La Liga standings with 57 points, one ahead of Atlético Madrid, who remain in second with 56. Real Madrid, with 53 points, have a chance to close the gap when they face Rayo Vallecano later on Sunday. Getafe’s victory boosts their tally to 33 points, providing breathing room from the relegation zone and halting a run of two consecutive losses.
