Motorists in Nairobi have been advised to brace for significant traffic changes on Sunday as the city prepares to host the opening match of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Authorities have announced several road closures and diversions around key routes leading to match venues, urging drivers to plan ahead to avoid delays.

The month-long continental tournament, which kicks off on August 3, is expected to draw large crowds from across the region.

To ensure smooth transport for participating teams, fans, and officials, city traffic police have rolled out an extensive control plan that will affect major roads in and around the capital.

Speaking on Thursday, Nairobi Traffic Commandant Joseph Chirchir detailed the temporary traffic measures, saying the changes are aimed at easing congestion and maintaining order during the high-profile event.

ā€œAerodrome Road will be fully closed between Madaraka Roundabout and Bunyala Roundabout starting Sunday morning,ā€ Chirchir said.

He also noted that partial closures will be enforced on Langata Road—from Madaraka to Lusaka Roundabout—and on Mombasa Road between Lusaka and Bunyala Roundabout.

To help manage the disruption, traffic police will be deployed to strategic points along the affected roads to direct vehicles and assist motorists.

Alternative routes have been outlined to reduce pressure on the city’s main arteries. Drivers using Mombasa Road to access the city centre are encouraged to detour via Likoni–Enterprise Road near General Motors or use the Southern Bypass through Ole Sereni.

Those traveling from Langata Road toward the city are advised to use Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road from Mbagathi Roundabout.

Chirchir also urged motorists headed to Thika, Ruiru, and surrounding areas from the CBD to consider using Limuru Road or Kiambu Road instead of passing near stadium zones, where heavy traffic is expected.

Likewise, motorists already on Thika Road can avoid congestion by rerouting through Eastern Bypass, Limuru Road, or Kiambu Road.

For football fans attending matches at Kasarani Stadium, especially the opening game, police have mapped out a dedicated route for public service vehicles.

The recommended path runs through Ruaraka–Baba Dogo Road to Ngomongo Road, ending at Ngomongo Roundabout, which provides direct access to the venue.

According to Chirchir, the traffic measures will be adjusted based on the match calendar and crowd movements throughout the tournament.

Nairobi joins other East African host cities in welcoming teams and supporters for CHAN 2024, which is being jointly held by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

The event marks a major milestone in regional football and is expected to showcase some of the continent’s top emerging talent.

Police continue to urge Nairobi residents to stay informed on traffic changes and cooperate fully with law enforcement to ensure a safe and successful tournament.
