Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has shared his aspirations for the team ahead of the upcoming 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), set to be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

In a conversation with FKF TV, McCarthy—who took the reins in March—outlined the kind of performances he wants his squad to produce during the tournament, with a particular focus on earning the respect and support of local fans.

“I hope Kenyans will be proud of the team they see on the field. It’ll be a team full of honesty—players who work hard, who are determined, who love to win,” McCarthy said.

“A team that’s hungry for success and gives everything in every match they play. That’s what I hope people will see when CHAN begins.”

Kenya will be under pressure to deliver from the first whistle, especially as hosts, but McCarthy believes a strong opening performance could define the team’s momentum in the competition.

“The importance of how good you start always sets you up nicely,” he said. “The first game is extremely important, but it’s not the end of the world. Argentina, for example, lost their opening match to Saudi Arabia at the 2022 World Cup, and they went on to win it.”

Nonetheless, the former South Africa international is eager to avoid a rocky beginning. “Come Sunday, my technical team and I will make the right decisions, because this nation deserves the best team—one that can fight, compete, and deliver exciting football.”

As he continues to adapt to life in Kenya, McCarthy also reflected on how his backroom staff are settling in. He couldn’t help but highlight one member of his team who seems to be embracing the local culture with surprising ease.

“We’re learning as time goes by. The goalkeeper coach is probably learning the fastest—he works with three other goalkeepers, all a bit crazy, and they’re constantly talking,” he said with a smile, referring to Moeneeb Josephs.

McCarthy’s tactical philosophy has already begun to show in the team’s recent displays. Their thrilling 3-3 friendly draw against Gambia showcased a more expressive and creative brand of football, with Mohammed Bajaber scoring a memorable goal off the bench. This attacking freedom is very much by design.

“I’m a very fair coach. I’m fair and tactically very good. I’m also an honest coach,” he said. “That’s what I hope people would say about me.”

As anticipation builds ahead of the tournament, McCarthy remains optimistic that his team will not only perform but inspire, giving fans a squad they can truly believe in.
