Lorenz Ferdinand, the 18-year-old son of Manchester United and England legend Rio Ferdinand, has signed his first professional contract with Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion. The young goalkeeper, who has been with the Seagulls since his under-13 days, is one of 13 academy prospects to secure a professional deal with the club ahead of the 2025/26 season, marking a pivotal step in his journey to emulate his father’s illustrious career.
Lorenz, unlike his father, who was a commanding centre-back during his playing days, has carved out his own path as a goalkeeper. His progression through Brighton’s academy has been steady, with notable experience gained during a work experience loan at seventh-tier side Havant & Waterlooville last season. There, he made an immediate impact, keeping two clean sheets in six unbeaten appearances, showcasing his potential as a shot-stopper. His performances earned praise, with Havant and Waterlooville noting that Lorenz “went from strength to strength” during his stint with the club.
Brighton’s academy manager, Ian Buckman, expressed his enthusiasm for the young talent, stating, “We’re pleased to see this cohort of players sign their first professional contracts here, with a number of them at the club from a very young age. We look forward to them continuing their careers with us and helping them develop over the coming years.” The club, renowned for nurturing young talent, particularly goalkeepers, sees Lorenz as a promising addition to their ranks.
Lorenz’s journey has not gone unnoticed by his father, Rio, who has been a vocal supporter of his son’s burgeoning career. The former Manchester United star, who played 455 times for the Red Devils and won six Premier League titles, took to social media to celebrate the moment. Reflecting on Lorenz’s signing with New Era Global Sports, a management agency where Rio serves as an ambassador, he wrote, “Our eldest is on his own journey in football. Another nice moment signing with @neweraglobalsports, well earned through hard work & dedication. It’s a long road full of ups and downs, so the right & professional support is required.” Rio’s pride was evident as he watched Lorenz make his senior debut for Havant and Waterlooville, joined by his wife, Kate, in the stands.
Lorenz’s path to this point has included significant milestones, such as his debut in Premier League 2 earlier this year and 20 appearances for Brighton’s under-18s. His loan spell at Havant and Waterlooville, where he started all six matches after joining in March, provided valuable senior-level experience. His debut for the Hawks, a 3-1 victory over Marlow FC, was a moment of pride for the Ferdinand family, with Rio present to witness his son’s first steps in senior football.
The signing of his professional contract has also drawn attention beyond Brighton, with Lorenz recently called up to the Benin national team, making his debut against Morocco last month. This international recognition has sparked interest from European clubs such as Sevilla, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Red Bull Leipzig, highlighting the young goalkeeper’s growing reputation.
