Manchester City’s hopes of salvaging their season with a FIFA Club World Cup title were dealt a double blow on Monday as they suffered a dramatic 4-3 defeat to Al-Hilal in the round of 16, compounded by a fresh injury to star midfielder Rodri. Manager Pep Guardiola confirmed the setback, revealing that the 29-year-old Spaniard, who had only recently returned from a lengthy recovery, was forced off the pitch due to a new physical complaint.

Rodri, the reigning Ballon d’Or winner, had been cautiously reintegrated into the squad following a serious knee injury sustained in September 2024 during a Premier League match against Arsenal. The injury, which involved damage to his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus, sidelined him for nearly the entire 2024-25 season, contributing significantly to City’s struggles, including a 13-point gap behind champions Liverpool in the Premier League. His absence was keenly felt, as City’s midfield lacked the control and stability he typically provides.

Having made his competitive return in May, Rodri featured sparingly in City’s Club World Cup campaign, with substitute appearances against Wydad AC and Al Ain, followed by a 66-minute start against Juventus. However, in the crucial knockout clash with Al-Hilal, Rodri came off the bench in the 53rd minute but lasted only 47 minutes before being withdrawn in extra time. Guardiola, speaking to reporters post-match, expressed concern, stating, “Rodri complained about his situation,” though he did not disclose the specific nature or severity of the injury.

The match itself was a rollercoaster, with City taking an early lead through Bernardo Silva, only to see Al-Hilal fight back with goals from Leonardo and Malcom. Erling Haaland equalized to force extra time, but despite a response from Phil Foden, Leonardo’s second goal secured Al-Hilal’s victory. Guardiola lamented his team’s lack of clinical finishing, noting, “We created a lot, but we have to score and be clinical. They didn’t create much, but we allowed transitions.”

Rodri’s latest setback raises questions about his availability for the upcoming 2025-26 Premier League season, set to begin with an away fixture against Wolves on August 16. Guardiola’s cautious approach to Rodri’s recovery had been evident, with the manager previously stating that the midfielder, despite feeling “very strong,” was not yet ready for full 90-minute performances due to the lingering effects of his knee injury. Rodri himself acknowledged the long road ahead, admitting it could take “months” to regain his peak form, which earned him global recognition as the world’s best midfielder.

The injury adds to Manchester City’s challenges after a disappointing season, with their Club World Cup exit eliminating their last chance for silverware in 2024-25. Guardiola, however, remained philosophical, praising his players’ efforts and the positive atmosphere during the tournament. “The vibe was really good, and I cannot thank the players enough for how they’ve been training and playing,” he said.
