The Emmy-winning documentary series “Welcome to Wrexham” has been renewed for a fifth season, FX announced on May 28, 2025, delighting fans of the heartwarming saga chronicling Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s ownership of Wrexham AFC. The news comes as the Welsh football club celebrates a historic third consecutive promotion, securing their place in the EFL Championship for the 2025-26 season, just one step below the Premier League. The series, which has captivated audiences since its debut on August 24, 2022, will continue to follow the club’s remarkable journey, capturing the highs and lows of the team, its players, and the passionate Wrexham community.

Broadcast on FX in the United States and streaming on Disney+ in the UK, “Welcome to Wrexham” has transformed the once-struggling Welsh club into a global phenomenon. The show, which blends humor, drama, and heartfelt storytelling, documents Reynolds and McElhenney’s efforts to revive Wrexham AFC, a club founded in 1864, after purchasing it in February 2021. Since then, the Red Dragons have soared from the fifth-tier National League to the EFL Championship, a meteoric rise fueled by the owners’ dedication and the club’s growing commercial success. The series has earned critical acclaim, securing eight Primetime Emmy Awards and two Critics’ Choice Television Awards, with a 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its authentic portrayal of the club and its supporters.

The fourth season, currently airing, follows Wrexham’s 2024-25 EFL League One campaign, which culminated in their latest promotion. The upcoming fifth season will dive into the club’s debut in the Championship, a highly competitive league that promises new challenges and higher stakes. Nick Grad, President of FX Entertainment, praised the club’s achievements, stating, “Wrexham AFC has exceeded all expectations on the pitch and with fans, scoring back-to-back promotions under the leadership of Rob and Ryan.” He highlighted the series’ ability to document the team’s fairytale journey and its profound impact on the Wrexham community and its growing global fanbase.

The announcement also revealed a new spin-off docuseries, “Necaxa,” featuring Reynolds, McElhenney, and Eva Longoria, who are investors in the Mexican club Club Necaxa. This venture, set to air on FX and Disney+ Latin America, aims to replicate the Wrexham magic by chronicling efforts to revitalize the historic Liga MX team. Grad noted, “With Eva Longoria, they’re now teaming to support the dreams and aspirations of the Necaxa fans and Aguascalientes community too.”

While Wrexham AFC receives no direct revenue from the documentary, the series has been a commercial game-changer, attracting high-profile sponsors like United Airlines, SToK Cold Brew Coffee, Meta, and HP. The club’s latest financial accounts for 2023-24 reported a record £26.7 million in revenue, with 52% derived from overseas, primarily North America, underscoring the show’s role as Wrexham’s “biggest commercial asset.” The global spotlight has elevated the club’s profile, turning a once-provincial team into a brand recognized worldwide.

The fifth season’s premiere date has not been announced, but new episodes of the current fourth season are available Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on FX, streaming the next day on Hulu and Disney+ for bundle subscribers in the U.S., and on Disney+ in the UK.
