West Ham United and Southampton played out a dramatic 1-1 draw at London Stadium on April 19, 2025, with Lesley Ugochukwu’s stoppage-time equalizer denying the Hammers a much-needed victory. The result extended West Ham’s winless run to six matches and saw Southampton inch closer to avoiding the unwanted record of the fewest points in a Premier League season, matching Derby County’s 2007-08 tally of 11 points.

Under Graham Potter’s guidance, West Ham, languishing in 17th with 35 points, were desperate to halt their slide against a relegated Southampton side winless in their last eight games. The first half was a cagey affair, with both teams struggling to create clear chances. West Ham generated an expected goals (xG) of 0.82 from 12 shots, while Southampton managed 0.75 from 15, reflecting the lack of quality in the final third. Goalkeepers Alphonse Areola and Aaron Ramsdale were rarely tested as both sides maintained their defensive shape.

The breakthrough arrived early in the second half when Jarrod Bowen struck in the 47th minute. Latching onto a precise pass from Lucas Paquetá, the England international fired a low shot past Ramsdale to give West Ham a 1-0 lead. The goal sparked life into the hosts, with Mohammed Kudus and Carlos Soler pushing for a second. Southampton, however, refused to buckle, with Kamaldeen Sulemana and Cameron Archer testing the Hammers’ backline. Potter’s decision to replace James Ward-Prowse with Konstantinos Mavropanos signaled an intent to see out the game, but it invited pressure.

In the 93rd minute, Southampton’s persistence paid off. A long free kick from Ramsdale caused chaos in the West Ham box, and Ugochukwu smashed the ball off the post and into the net for a dramatic equalizer. The goal sparked wild celebrations among the traveling Saints fans, who saw their side secure a rare point. West Ham’s 48% possession and four shots on target were matched by Southampton’s 52% and four on target, underlining the evenly contested nature of the match.

Graham Potter was visibly frustrated post-match, telling Sky Sports, “We had control after the goal, but we got too cautious. Credit to Southampton—they fought until the end. We need to learn from this and be more clinical.” Southampton’s interim boss Simon Rusk praised his team’s spirit, saying, “The lads showed tremendous character. We’re playing for pride now, and to get a point here is massive. Lesley’s goal was a reward for our persistence.”

West Ham’s winless streak leaves them teetering above the relegation zone, with a crucial trip to Brighton next. Potter will be without Crysencio Summerville and Michail Antonio, while Aaron Cresswell remains doubtful. The Hammers’ inability to convert chances, exemplified by Niclas Füllkrug’s late miss, remains a concern. Southampton, buoyed by their resilience, face Fulham at home next, with Flynn Downes available but Paul Onuachu doubtful. The Saints need one more point to surpass Derby’s record-low total, a small but symbolic target in a torrid season.
