Liverpool Football Club has confirmed that Mohamed Salah will depart at the conclusion of the 2025-26 season, bringing an end to one of the most celebrated careers in the club’s modern history.
The 33-year-old Egyptian forward, who arrived from Roma in 2017, will close a remarkable nine-year chapter that saw him establish himself as one of the Premier League’s most prolific and decorated players.
The announcement, made jointly by the club and the player on March 24, 2026, comes just under a year after Salah signed a two-year contract extension that was intended to keep him at Anfield through the 2026-27 season.
Liverpool’s official statement confirmed that an agreement has been reached for the forward’s departure, with Salah himself requesting that the news be shared with supporters immediately out of respect for their loyalty.
“Mohamed Salah is to bring the curtain down on his illustrious career with Liverpool Football Club at the end of the 2025-26 season,” the club said in a statement. “Salah expressed his wish to make this announcement to the supporters at the earliest possible opportunity to provide transparency about his future due to his respect and gratitude for them.”
In an emotional video posted to social media, Salah delivered the news directly to fans, his message interwoven with highlights from a career that yielded 255 goals in 435 appearances, placing him third on Liverpool’s all-time scoring list. His words reflected the depth of connection he forged with the city and its supporters.
“Hello everyone. Unfortunately, the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell: I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season,” Salah said. “I wanted to start by saying that I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people, would become part of my life. Liverpool is not just a football club. It’s a passion. It’s a history. It’s a spirit. I can’t explain in words to anyone not part of this club.”
He continued, reflecting on the triumphs and trials shared during his time on Merseyside: “We celebrated victory. We won the most important trophies. And we fought together through the hardest time in our life. I want to thank everyone who was part of this club throughout my time here, especially the team-mates, past and present.”
Salah’s farewell carried a particularly poignant note for a fanbase that adopted him as one of their own. “And to the fans: I don’t have enough words. The support you showed me through the best time of my career and you stood by me in the toughest times. It’s something I will never forget, and something I will take with me always. Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life. I will always be one of you. This club will always be my home, to me and to my family. Thank you for everything. Because of all of you, I will never walk alone.”

The announcement marks the end of a period of uncertainty surrounding Salah’s future. While he had signed a new deal in April 2025, tensions emerged during the current campaign.
In December, Salah publicly criticised manager Arne Slot after being omitted from the squad for three consecutive matches, suggesting he had been “thrown under the bus” amid a difficult run of form. He was subsequently left out of a Champions League fixture against Inter Milan but was reintegrated following the Africa Cup of Nations and has remained a regular starter.
Despite the turbulence, Salah’s statistical legacy is beyond dispute. Since his £37 million arrival from Roma, he has helped Liverpool secure two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, the FA Cup, two League Cups and a Community Shield.
He has claimed the Premier League Golden Boot on four occasions and became only the third player in club history to reach 250 goals, achieving that milestone in November 2025.
The timing of the announcement has drawn attention given the unusual contractual situation. Salah’s current deal runs through the summer of 2027, meaning his departure will not come as a free transfer.
Liverpool has not specified whether the agreement involves a termination, a sale, or another arrangement, but the club emphasised that Salah remains focused on the remainder of the season. “Since there are still many matches left to play this season, Salah’s full focus is on securing as successful an end to the campaign as possible for Liverpool,” the club noted, adding that a fuller celebration of his legacy will follow later in the year.
Speculation regarding Salah’s next destination has centred most prominently on the Saudi Pro League, where interest has persisted across multiple transfer windows. Al-Ittihad attempted to sign him on loan in 2024, and Saudi Pro League officials have publicly confirmed that Salah remains a target.
The player himself acknowledged in May 2025 that discussions with Saudi representatives had been “serious,” indicating that a move to the region would have materialised had he not renewed with Liverpool.
The announcement has already drawn reaction from within the Liverpool dressing room. Midfielder Ryan Gravenberch became the first teammate to respond publicly, commenting “Legend” accompanied by a heart emoji on Salah’s farewell post.
Salah’s departure represents a defining moment for Liverpool as the club prepares for life after one of its most transformative figures. His nine seasons at Anfield coincided with a period of sustained success and redefined expectations for the forward position in English football.
