Galatasaray winger Noa Lang is facing a spell on the sidelines after suffering a serious thumb laceration in a freak accident during his side’s 4-0 Champions League defeat to Liverpool at Anfield, with the Dutch forward requiring emergency surgery in Merseyside.
The 26-year-old, who had been introduced as a half-time substitute, was involved in a seemingly innocuous incident in the 76th minute when he lost his balance following a challenge with Liverpool’s Curtis Jones.
Lang placed his hands on the advertising hoardings to steady himself, but his right thumb became caught between two sections of the board, which then slammed shut with the force of his momentum.
The severity of the injury became immediately apparent as the Netherlands international fell to the turf clutching his hand, with blood visible at the scene.
Players from both sides, including Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker and captain Virgil van Dijk, rushed to console the distraught forward as medical staff administered oxygen before he was stretchered from the field.
Galatasaray confirmed the extent of the damage in a statement released on Thursday morning. “In the second half of the same match, our player Noa Lang, who suffered an injury, sustained a serious cut to his right thumb, and it is planned for him to undergo surgery in Liverpool in the coming hours with the participation of our medical team,” the Turkish club announced.
Head coach Okan Buruk had earlier described it as a “bad injury” in his post-match press conference. “He is going to the hospital because of the important issue he has with his finger,” Buruk said. “If there is an operation, they will do it here”.

The full extent of the damage was relayed by Lang’s international teammate, Liverpool full-back Jeremie Frimpong. Speaking to Dutch media after the game, Frimpong delivered a harrowing assessment. “When I went to check on Noa Lang, a few people told me that half of his finger had been torn off,” Frimpong revealed. “He was in a lot of pain”.
Despite the gruesome nature of the injury, Lang displayed remarkable resilience in his first public statement following the procedure. The former Club Brugge winger took to Instagram from his hospital bed at Whiston Hospital, sharing a selfie in which he smiled alongside two nurses while still wearing his Galatasaray kit.
“S*** happens,” Lang captioned the post, before adding to his Instagram Stories: “Surgery went well! Thanks for all the messages”. The message drew an immediate response from Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch, who replied with a hands-together emoji and a red heart.
UEFA and Liverpool officials were seen inspecting the same section of advertising hoarding after the match, though it remains unclear whether any fault with the equipment was identified.
The incident cast a shadow over what was otherwise a triumphant evening for the hosts, who overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit with a dominant performance to secure a 4-1 aggregate victory.
Liverpool will now face Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals, but for Lang, the immediate focus is on recovery. The club confirmed that the decision regarding surgery for fellow forward Victor Osimhen, who sustained a fractured right forearm in a first-half challenge with Ibrahima Konaté, will be made in the coming days following further evaluation.
