In a strategic Deadline Day move, Wolverhampton Wanderers have secured the services of England international midfielder Angel Gomes on a loan deal from Ligue 1’s Olympique de Marseille.

The agreement, confirmed on February 3, 2026, includes an option for a permanent transfer reportedly worth around £6 million and provides a significant boost to Wolves’ squad as they battle against relegation.

The 25-year-old Gomes returns to the Premier League seeking consistent playing time after finding his opportunities limited at Marseille, where he had not started a league match since November.

Wolves manager Rob Edwards, who has known Gomes from their time within the England setup, expressed his delight at the acquisition.

“I’m delighted, really excited,” Edwards stated. “I’ve got a really good relationship with Angel – we go back quite a long way now. I thought he was a brilliant, technical player, and he’s got a great brain. He gives us real quality in that midfield area”. Edwards further emphasized Gomes’s eagerness for the challenge, noting, “He’s really excited to get playing in England, and it’s really exciting for us to have someone who’s hungry to be here and wants to show everyone how good he is”.

Gomes brings a wealth of experience from his career across England, France, and on the European stage. A product of the Manchester United academy, he made history as the club’s youngest debutant since Duncan Edwards when he replaced Wayne Rooney at age 16 in 2017.

After ten senior appearances for United, he moved to Lille in 2020, where he established himself before joining Marseille on a free transfer last summer. An England Under-21 European Championship winner in 2023, Gomes earned four senior caps under interim coach Lee Carsley in 2024.

The transfer represents a calculated piece of business for a Wolves side currently bottom of the Premier League and 18 points from safety.

The loan structure with an option to buy provides flexibility, allowing the club to secure a high-caliber player without immediate long-term financial commitment, a crucial factor given their precarious league position.

Gomes arrives as part of a Deadline Day double signing, alongside striker Adam Armstrong, who joins permanently from Southampton.

Gomes is expected to integrate quickly into the squad as Rob Edwards seeks to add technical quality and control in midfield during the fight for Premier League survival. His arrival signals the club’s intent to bolster its creative options for the remainder of a difficult season.
