In a decisive move to bolster their survival hopes, Burnley Football Club have confirmed the signing of midfielder James Ward-Prowse on loan from West Ham United for the remainder of the season.
The transfer, finalized on January 28, 2026, marks Burnley’s first acquisition of the January window and brings a wealth of top-flight experience to a squad entrenched in a relegation battle.
The 31-year-old former England international, who has amassed over 400 Premier League appearances, arrives at Turf Moor having been deemed surplus to requirements at West Ham under manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
Ward-Prowse had not featured for the Hammers since Nuno’s appointment in late September, with sources indicating he was training separately from the main squad. “I’m really pleased to be here,” Ward-Prowse stated upon the announcement.
“As soon as I heard of Burnley’s interest and spoke to the manager, I knew this loan spell was just what I needed. There’s a big battle between now and the end of the season, but I’m going to relish every moment. I just want to get out there, pull on the Burnley shirt and give my all for the challenge that’s ahead”.

For Burnley manager Scott Parker, the signing addresses a critical need for seasoned leadership and quality. The Clarets sit 19th in the table, ten points from safety, and have been without a league win since October.
The move is also a direct response to a long-term injury to midfielder Josh Cullen, who is facing approximately nine months on the sidelines. Ward-Prowse, renowned as a dead-ball specialist with 17 direct free-kick goals in the Premier League, is expected to provide immediate set-piece threat and midfield control.
The loan concludes a difficult period for Ward-Prowse at West Ham, which followed a £30 million move from Southampton in 2023. His fortunes failed to improve after a loan spell at Nottingham Forest last season was cut short, ironically when Nuno was in charge at the City Ground.
West Ham’s decision to loan him to a direct relegation rival, the Hammers are just five points above Burnley, suggests a desire to see the player regain form and value ahead of a potential permanent departure.
The deal contains no option to buy, meaning Ward-Prowse will return to West Ham in the summer, where he remains under contract until 2027. His first opportunity to feature for Burnley could come as soon as their next fixture.
For a club in desperate need of a turnaround, the acquisition of a player of Ward-Prowse’s caliber and experience represents a significant gamble and a clear statement of intent in their fight for Premier League status.
