In a move that reunites him with significant Spanish football history and adds firepower to their attacking line, French striker Neal Maupay has joined Sevilla FC on a loan deal from Olympique de Marseille until the end of the current season.
The agreement, confirmed by both clubs this week, includes a reported €6 million option for Sevilla to make the transfer permanent.
The 29-year-old forward arrives in La Liga after a season of extreme frustration at Marseille, where he managed just 90 total minutes of playing time under manager Roberto De Zerbi, featuring for only a single minute in Ligue 1.
This lack of opportunity made a January exit inevitable. “Good luck, Neal Maupay,” posted his former club on their official English-language social media channel, confirming the striker’s departure for Spain.
Maupay’s switch to the Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán was immediately colored by a moment of social media banter that highlighted his well-known personality.

Shortly after the deal was announced, a tweet from Sevilla’s official English account from August 2025 resurfaced.
It read, “As soon as Neal Maupay comes on and doesn’t score, the social media manager smiles,” referencing a friendly match between the two clubs. The player himself was quick to respond. “Hey social media manager, where’s your office? I just wanted to have a word,” Maupay replied, showcasing the humorous exchange that greeted his arrival.
On the pitch, Maupay is tasked with helping a Sevilla side that finds itself in an unfamiliar and precarious position. The historic club, a six-time UEFA Europa League winner, currently sits 12th in the La Liga table, a mere three points above the relegation zone.
The club’s management is hoping Maupay’s experience in top European leagues can provide a crucial boost in their battle for survival.
Maupay brings a career of varied fortunes to Spain. He rose to prominence in England, first as a prolific scorer for Brentford in the Championship, where he netted 37 league goals, and later in the Premier League with Brighton & Hove Albion.
A challenging stint at Everton followed, where he scored just once in 29 league appearances, before his move to Marseille. He will wear the number 17 shirt for his new club.
The loan deal represents a critical opportunity for Maupay to rediscover regular football and goal-scoring form.
For Sevilla, it is a calculated gamble to add a seasoned, if sometimes controversial, striker to their ranks as they fight to secure their top-flight status and climb the La Liga table. The coming months will determine if this partnership becomes a longer-term fixture.
