Liverpool Football Club and the wider football community are today mourning with defender Ibrahima Konaté, who has confirmed the passing of his father, Hamady Konaté.

The 26-year-old French international shared the heartbreaking news on social media following his absence from Liverpool’s recent UEFA Champions League victory over Marseille.

Konaté was not included in the squad for the match at Anfield, with the club initially stating he had returned to his native France to attend to a private family matter.

Manager Arne Slot later addressed the situation, expressing his sympathy. “First of all, for the family matter, why he is not here, it is very sad for him,” Slot said in a post-match interview. The Dutch coach also noted the sporting impact of the defender’s absence, having consistently selected Konaté alongside Virgil van Dijk this season.

On his Instagram account, Konaté, a practising Muslim, announced funeral arrangements for his father and included a verse from the Quran: “From Him we come, and to Him we return”. He also shared a hadith, writing: “The Messenger of Allah said: There is no deceased person for whom a group of Muslims, numbering one hundred, pray, all supplicating for him, without their requests (for the deceased) being accepted”.

The funeral prayer, Salat al-Janazah, was scheduled to take place on Friday.

Tributes and messages of support have flowed in from teammates. Following the clean sheet kept in Konaté’s absence, captain Virgil van Dijk sent a direct message. “My thoughts are with him. I’m very happy to play with Joe [Gomez]. We are good friends, that helps as well. He played outstanding,” Van Dijk said.

Hamady Konaté was an immigrant from Mali who, with his wife, raised their eight children in Paris. The defender has often spoken of his father’s profound influence on his life and career.

In a past interview, Konaté recalled the simple but powerful advice his father gave him when he left home at 15 to join the academy at FC Sochaux-Montbéliard: “Become someone good”. That guidance became a defining mission for the young player.

Reflecting on praise he later received from a Sochaux supervisor, Konaté said, “I took a screenshot and kept it because I knew I had fulfilled the mission my father gave me”.

His former coach at Sochaux, Éric Hély, noted that this paternal influence was a key driver in Konaté’s development. “He didn’t want to let anyone down, especially his father,” Hély observed.

That dedication saw Konaté rise from the academy in France to the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig and finally to a marquee £36 million move to Liverpool in 2021, where he has since won major honours including the Premier League.

The defender’s family, rooted in trust and mutual support, remains central to his life. Konaté has previously stated that his brothers act as his agents and managers, describing them as “the only people he can trust”.

While his parents, who worked as a cleaner and a refuse collector, were not deeply involved in the business of football, their emotional support was constant. “They do watch every match of their son and after the game call him and ask him how he is doing,” one profile noted.

As the football world offers its condolences, the focus remains on Konaté and his family during this period of loss. Liverpool has not yet confirmed a timeline for his return to the squad. The club and its supporters will undoubtedly provide their steadfast support to a player who has consistently demonstrated strength on the pitch and who now faces a profound personal challenge off it.
