Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of England international midfielder Conor Gallagher from Atlético Madrid for a reported fee of £34 million, securing a crucial reinforcement for manager Thomas Frank amidst an injury-plagued season.
The 25-year-old has signed a long-term contract, understood to run until the summer of 2031, marking a swift return to London after an 18-month spell in Spain.
Gallagher expressed his enthusiasm about the move, stating, “I’m so happy and excited to be here, taking the next step in my career at an amazing club. I wanted to be a Spurs player and thankfully the club felt the same. It was very easy, it happened very quickly and I’m ready to get on the pitch”.
He also acknowledged the club’s supporters, adding, “I know how great the fans are, I’m really happy to be a part of it here and want to create special moments and memories together”. The transfer was accelerated following a significant midfield injury crisis at Tottenham, with key player Rodrigo Bentancur ruled out for most of the season after undergoing hamstring surgery.
Head coach Thomas Frank, who identified Gallagher as a primary target, highlighted the midfielder’s all-around qualities. “Conor is a top midfielder, who we have worked tirelessly to add to our squad,” Frank said. “He is still young, so has plenty of room for improvement, but also has huge experience across the Premier League, La Liga and with the England national team”.
Frank emphasized the intangible assets Gallagher brings, noting, “Conor has captained teams so will bring leadership, maturity, character and personality to our dressing room, while his running power, pressing ability and eye for goal will strengthen us in a key area of the pitch”.

The acquisition concludes a long-standing pursuit by Tottenham, who were previously interested in Gallagher during his time at Chelsea. Spurs successfully outmaneuvered direct competition from Aston Villa for his signature; Villa had approached Atlético Madrid about an initial loan deal, but the Spanish club preferred a permanent sale.
Gallagher’s path to regular first-team football in Madrid had become less certain this season following the arrival of several new midfielders, making the return to the Premier League an attractive proposition.
Gallagher brings extensive top-flight experience to a Spurs squad currently sitting 14th in the Premier League table. A product of Chelsea’s academy, he made 136 Premier League appearances for Chelsea, Crystal Palace, and West Bromwich Albion before his move to Spain.
At Atlético, he made 77 total appearances and scored seven goals, including a historic strike in the Champions League where he became the first Englishman to score in a Madrid derby.
An established England international with 22 senior caps and experience at the 2024 European Championship, the move is also seen as vital for his hopes of securing a place in England’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
While Gallagher’s energy and box-to-box profile address an immediate need, reports suggest Tottenham’s recruitment team continues to seek a deep-lying creative midfielder to complete their engine room.
The club is also reportedly active in the market for attacking reinforcements. Nonetheless, the swift capture of Gallagher is viewed as a significant show of backing for manager Thomas Frank and a necessary step to stabilize the team’s fortunes for the second half of the season.
