In a result that epitomizes their turbulent season, managerless Manchester United were eliminated from the Emirates FA Cup by Brighton & Hove Albion, falling to a 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford.

The victory, sealed by former United striker Danny Welbeck, marked Brighton’s first-ever FA Cup triumph over the Red Devils after six previous attempts and continued a dismal cup campaign for the hosts, who were also knocked out of the League Cup at the first hurdle.

The match began with United applying early pressure, but Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele made crucial saves to deny Diogo Dalot and a deflected Bruno Fernandes effort. Against the run of play, Brighton took the lead in the 12th minute.

A cross from Welbeck found Georginio Rutter, whose header was cleared off the line by Lisandro Martinez, only for Brajan Gruda to pounce on the rebound and fire home. United, under the interim management of Darren Fletcher, struggled to muster a coherent response for the remainder of a tense first half.

Brighton doubled their advantage midway through the second half with a move that cut through United’s defense. A pass from Joel Veltman found Gruda, who laid the ball off to Welbeck on the edge of the area.

The 35-year-old captain took a touch before unleashing a thunderous left-footed strike into the roof of the net for his eighth career goal against his boyhood club. A lifeline arrived for United in the 85th minute when Benjamin Šeško headed in a Fernandes corner.

However, any hope of a comeback evaporated in the 89th minute as teenage substitute Shea Lacey, who had earlier been booked, received a second yellow card for dissent and was sent off on his Old Trafford debut.

The defeat confirms a historically barren season for United, who have now been eliminated from both domestic cup competitions at their first opportunity for the first time since the 1981-82 season. With no European football this term, the club is now guaranteed to play only 40 competitive matches, their fewest in a complete campaign in 111 years.

The result also likely concludes Fletcher’s two-game stint as interim boss, with the club expected to imminently appoint either Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or Michael Carrick to oversee the remainder of a season where only Premier League positioning remains to fight for.

For Brighton, the victory exorcised the ghosts of past FA Cup disappointments against United and propels them into a fourth-round draw featuring several other top-flight casualties.
