Tottenham Captain Romero Launches Scathing Attack on Club Leadership

The Argentine defender’s fiery social media statement, posted in the immediate aftermath of Wednesday's 3-2 loss, has ignited a fresh crisis at the North London club and placed the hierarchy directly in the line of fire.

In a stunning public rebuke of Tottenham Hotspur’s leadership, club captain Cristian Romero has accused the board of dishonesty and absenteeism following a dramatic late defeat to Bournemouth.

The Argentine defender’s fiery social media statement, posted in the immediate aftermath of Wednesday’s 3-2 loss, has ignited a fresh crisis at the North London club and placed the hierarchy directly in the line of fire.

The controversial post appeared on Romero’s Instagram account shortly after Antoine Semenyo’s 95th-minute winner sealed a victory for Bournemouth, who had been winless in their previous eleven league games. The result left Spurs languishing in 14th place in the Premier League, having secured only two wins in their last twelve outings.

In his message, Romero offered an apology to the travelling supporters but quickly pivoted to a pointed criticism of the club’s executives. “At times like this, it should be other people coming out to speak, but they don’t – as has been happening for several years now,” Romero wrote.

“They only show up when things are going well, to tell a few lies”. The incendiary line containing the phrase “to tell a few lies” was later edited out of the post, but the original version had already been widely circulated.

This outburst is not an isolated incident but the culmination of growing frustration. Just last month, following a 4-3 collapse against Chelsea, Romero gave an interview where he explicitly criticized the board’s lack of investment and cyclical blame culture.

“The last few years, it’s always the same – first the players, then the coaching staff changes, and it’s always the same people responsible,” he told Telemundo Deportes in December. He pointed to the sustained spending of rivals like Manchester City and Liverpool as a model Tottenham should imitate, arguing that the club has the structure to compete for titles but lacks the decisive action from above.

Romero’s latest comments suggest a deep-seated belief that responsibility for the club’s prolonged underachievement lies squarely with Chairman Daniel Levy and the board, rather than with the succession of managers and players who have come and gone.

The atmosphere at the Vitality Stadium turned toxic at the final whistle, underscoring the severity of the situation. Teammates Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro were involved in heated confrontations with furious Spurs fans who had made the long trip south, requiring intervention from other players and staff.

Manager Thomas Frank, who is facing intense scrutiny in his first season, approached the away end only to be met with a chorus of boos. This palpable disconnect between the squad, the dugout, and the supporters forms the volatile backdrop to Romero’s very public challenge to his employers.

The board has yet to issue any formal response to their captain’s allegations. However, Romero’s words have resonated within the dressing room, with teammates including Pedro Porro and Richarlison publicly expressing support for his post on social media.

The incident raises profound questions about Romero’s own future and suitability as captain, given his history of disciplinary issues and the unprecedented nature of his criticism. More significantly, it represents the most direct challenge yet to the Levy era, amplifying calls from pundits like Jamie Carragher who argue it is “probably time for somebody else to come in” to lead the football club.
