Chelsea strengthened their push for the top of the Premier League table with a composed 2-0 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor. Despite a somewhat shaky start, the Blues asserted themselves when it mattered, thanks to a diving header from Pedro Neto just before halftime and a late strike from Enzo Fernández that sealed the win.

Burnley came into the match with energy and urgency, particularly in the opening 15 minutes. Their wide players looked dangerous, and long balls into the box tested Chelsea’s defensive organization.

Yet, while they mustered forward momentum, they were not able to translate it into meaningful chances. Chelsea, for their part, were tentative early on, struggling to settle in without the rhythm of Moisés Caicedo, who was rested for this trip north.

As the first half progressed, Chelsea began to find their stride. A long ball forward from Tosin Adarabioyo was cleverly controlled by Marc Cucurella, who laid it off for Jamie Gittens.

Gittens’ delivery was inch-perfect, and Neto met it with a diving header at the back post in the 37th minute. It was Chelsea’s first real moment of quality in front of goal, but they made it count.

After taking the lead, Chelsea grew more comfortable. They looked to control the game through patient build-up and maintained a steady defensive shape to limit Burnley’s opportunities.

The Clarets did threaten on occasion: early on, Loum Tchaouna blazed a shot straight at Robert Sánchez, but as the half wore on, their attacking threat diminished steadily.

Just after halftime, Chelsea made a change: Benoît Badiashile replaced Reece James. The substitution underscored Maresca’s intent to maintain control without taking unnecessary risks.

Despite a technical delay involving an assistant referee’s radio, Chelsea resumed with the same disciplined tempo that had brought them the lead.

Burnley had one of their clearest moments in the second half during a free-kick, when Quilindschy Hartman picked out Zian Flemming, but his effort sailed over the bar. That would be one of their few opportunities after a promising first spell.

As Chelsea pressed on, Neto came agonizingly close to scoring again in the 63rd minute. He was played in down the right, fired a low shot at the near post, but it was tipped away by Martin Dubravka – hitting the post in the process.

Burnley’s momentum waned as the second half progressed. Their aspirations to equalize were hampered not just by Chelsea’s organization, but by their own inability to sustain pressure. Between the 39th minute and the end of the match, they managed only one additional shot – a stark contrast to their early intensity.

Chelsea, sensing Burnley’s urgency to push men forward in search of a goal, remained disciplined and shifted gears when needed. In the 88th minute, they struck on the counterattack. The move was sparked from the back by Sánchez, and transitioned swiftly to Marc Guiu on the flank.

The teenager showed impressive composure to drive past his marker and lay the ball on for Fernández, who arrived in the box to finish emphatically. That goal not only doubled Chelsea’s lead but fully deflated Burnley’s hopes of a comeback.

Statistically, this was a strong showing for Chelsea. They have now claimed three successive league wins by clean sheet for the first time since March 2022. Their dominance at Turf Moor continues to be a feature: historically, Chelsea have enjoyed great success at Burnley, and this result further underlines their ability to perform consistently away from home.

Meanwhile, Burnley’s bright start belied a deeper struggle – they have now lost most of their home games when trailing at halftime, extending a worrying trend.
