Qarabağ v Chelsea

In Baku at the Tofiq Bəhramov Republican Stadium, the continental stage offered up a compelling night of drama as Qarabağ FK and Chelsea FC played out a 2-2 draw in the 2025–26 UEFA Champions League group phase.

It was a fixture that promised intrigue given Qarabağ’s surprising start to the campaign and Chelsea’s efforts to regain a foothold in Europe, and the result leaves both sides with mixed emotions.

Chelsea appeared to be in good shape early on. Their Brazilian teenager Estêvão opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a neat finish, giving the visitors early momentum. But the home side did not sit back. Before the half-hour mark, Qarabağ responded through Leandro Andrade, who steered home a rebound in the 29th minute.

The momentum shifted further when Chelsea’s young defender Jorrel Hato handled the ball in the box and the referee awarded a penalty, which Marko Janković duly converted to give Qarabağ a surprising 2-1 lead going into the interval.

For long periods in the first half, Chelsea had looked comfortable on the ball and in control of possession. Statistics showed they enjoyed roughly 61 percent of the ball, yet possession did not translate into control of the game narrative.

Alejandro Garnacho v Qarabağ

Qarabağ chose an approach that emphasised compact defensive blocks and rapid transition; the penalty incident underscored Chelsea’s fragility when the hosts dared to counter.

The build-up to the match hinted at challenges for Chelsea. Manager Enzo Maresca spoke beforehand of the need to rotate given a heavy schedule and a long trip back to London. Chelsea’s head coach indeed made significant changes, balancing the European fixture with domestic demands.

But the disruption seemed to affect rhythm, especially in the defensive phase.

At half-time, Chelsea were staring at an unexpected scenario: a deficit in defensive discipline and a need to switch it up. With the scoreline against them, Maresca responded.

He introduced Alejandro Garnacho, Liam Delap and Enzo Fernández into the fray, signalling an intent to recapture control and add impetus to the attack. The move paid off swiftly: in the 53rd minute, Garnacho powered a low left-footed strike past the Qarabağ keeper to restore parity.

From that moment, the tide of the game shifted. Chelsea looked more assured. Garnacho’s introduction injected spontaneity and threat, while Delap’s presence kept the Qarabağ back-line unsettled.

Yet, despite the regained momentum, there remained a lack of clinical finishing and defensive lapses that prevented Chelsea from pulling away.

For Qarabağ, this result represents a moral victory in some respects. Historically, head-to-head data had heavily favoured Chelsea, two previous meetings, both wins for the London club: 6-0 and 4-0. So to draw here, on home ground, against a side of Chelsea’s calibre, underlines the Azerbaijani side’s growth and hunger in European competition.

However, the draw also leaves Chelsea with work to do. A point away from home is acceptable but hardly ideal when one of their aims is to finish top of the group. The defensive immaturity displayed, especially permitting the hosts to apply pressure and win a penalty, will concern Maresca.
