After four seasons that transformed him from a Nigerian prospect into an international star, goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has formally departed South Africa’s Chippa United by mutual consent, the club confirmed on Thursday, February 5.
The 29-year-old submitted a formal transfer request, which the Port Elizabeth-based club granted following careful consideration.
In an official statement, Chippa United expressed gratitude for Nwabali’s service: “We would like to sincerely thank Stanley Nwabali for the years of service, commitment, and professionalism he has shown during his time at Chippa United Football Club. His contribution to the club will always be appreciated”.
The club extended its best wishes for his future endeavors.
In a personal reflection, Nwabali admitted the decision was emotionally challenging. “It was tough since yesterday when this decision was made. It’s not really a nice feeling, you know,” he told Metro FM.
Describing the club as a home, he added, “Parting from the club after four years is not a good feeling because it’s like leaving your home, where you have been with these guys for a long time… However, I might say goodbye now, but not forever”.

Importantly, Nwabali clarified that his departure was not prompted by a pre-arranged deal, stating, “To be honest with you, there’s no contract offered to me by any team at the moment. In football, your happiness comes first”.
Nwabali’s journey at Chippa United, which began in 2022, became a career-defining chapter. His consistent and commanding performances for the club propelled him onto the international stage, where he seized the starting goalkeeper position for Nigeria.
He rose to continental fame during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where his crucial penalty shootout saves in the semi-final against South Africa were instrumental in sending the Super Eagles to the final, earning him the Man of the Match honor.
He recently added to his international achievements by winning a bronze medal at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
With his status as Nigeria’s number-one goalkeeper firmly established, Nwabali’s next move is the subject of intense speculation.
For the past two years, he has been linked with high-profile moves. South African giants Kaizer Chiefs have been long-term admirers and are considered strong contenders to secure his signature following his release.
Other reported interest has come from clubs in North Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. Tanzanian powerhouse Simba SC had also expressed concrete interest in recent weeks.
As a free agent, Nwabali is now positioned to carefully choose his next challenge. Industry observers expect his decision to be influenced by a project that guarantees competitive playing time, a key factor for maintaining his national team spot, alongside a suitable financial package.
The coming days are anticipated to bring clarity to the future of one of Africa’s most celebrated goalkeepers as he concludes a pivotal chapter in Gqeberha and looks ahead to the next stage of his career.
