Tranmere Rovers have bolstered their midfield options with the loan signing of Zech Obiero from Leyton Orient until the end of the season, a move both clubs hope will accelerate the 21-year-old’s development with consistent first-team football.
The England-born midfielder, who represents Kenya at the Under-20 level, completed the temporary switch to Prenton Park on February 2, 2026, as part of a broader deadline-day recruitment drive by the League Two club.
Expressing his eagerness for the opportunity, Obiero stated, “Going out on loan is something that I really wanted for the second half of this season”. He outlined his intention to make an impact at his new club, adding, “I’m going to give my all for Tranmere and hopefully I can learn a lot from the experience”.
Describing his playing style, the midfielder said, “I’m more attacking-minded. I like to work hard and track back, but going forward I enjoy dribbling and getting goals and assists. That’s my game”.

Tranmere manager Andy Crosby welcomed the acquisition, praising Obiero’s potential and attitude. “We’re really pleased to bring Zech in,” Crosby said. “He’s a young player with potential and a fantastic attitude. He’s technically good, plays with energy and bravery”.
The loan is a straightforward arrangement without an option for a permanent transfer, emphasizing its purpose as a developmental step.
Obiero’s parent club, Leyton Orient, currently competing in League One, echoed this sentiment. Orient head coach Richie Wellens underscored the importance of regular playing time for the young professional. “This is a great opportunity for Zech,” Wellens said.
“As I have said previously, he needs to play regularly and learn all sides of the game. Once he’s done this, he has the ability to become a really big player for us”.
This view is shared by sections of the Orient support, with one fan commenting on the club’s social media that Obiero “looks a better player than some of the non-performers” in the squad and deserved more chances.
Obiero’s football education began in the prestigious academy of Tottenham Hotspur before he moved to Leyton Orient’s youth setup at the age of 14. He signed his first professional contract with the O’s in 2022 and made his senior debut that same year.
To gain experience, he has previously spent time on loan at non-league sides Cheshunt and Chelmsford City. The midfielder, who stands at 1.70 meters, holds dual eligibility for Kenya and England and has already earned a cap for Kenya’s Under-20 national team.
At Tranmere, Obiero joins a group of new signings that also includes Lewis Warrington on a permanent deal, as well as fellow loanees Max Dickov and Stephan Negru.
His immediate focus will be on securing a place in the team and contributing to Tranmere’s campaign, with his performances until the loan concludes on May 31, 2026, likely to be pivotal for the next phase of his career upon his return to Brisbane Road.
