In a deadline day move that sees him return to familiar territory, Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips is set to complete a loan transfer to Sheffield United until the end of the season.
The move will reunite the former England international with the Championship, the league where he first rose to prominence, in a bid to revive a career that has stalled dramatically since his high-profile transfer to the Etihad Stadium.
The deal, confirmed as a straight loan without an option for Sheffield United to make the move permanent, was finalised as the January transfer window drew to a close.
Phillips is now scheduled to undergo a medical to complete his switch to Bramall Lane, where manager Chris Wilder is looking to strengthen a squad sitting seventeenth in the Championship table.
Speaking about the club’s deadline day activity, Wilder noted, “We’re interested in good players. I said all along I want the group to be strong when the window shuts. It’s a working day for us and we’re working hard to get some over the line”.

For Phillips, the loan represents a critical opportunity for regular football after making just one appearance for Manchester City this season, a seven-minute cameo in the Carabao Cup back in September.
His tenure at City, which began with a £45 million move from Leeds United in 2022, has been defined by frustration and limited opportunity, yielding only 32 total appearances and four starts.
A serious shoulder injury early in his City career was followed by a very public setback when manager Pep Guardiola stated the player returned from the 2022 World Cup “overweight” and “not in the right condition to train”. Guardiola later apologised for the comments, telling reporters, “I’m sorry. I do apologise to him. I’m so sorry”.
Attempts to resurrect his form through previous loans at West Ham United and, most recently, Ipswich Town have yielded little success. Now, the move to Sheffield United offers a different context.
It brings Phillips back to the Championship, where he excelled with Leeds, and sees him reunite with former teammate Patrick Bamford. The challenge is significant for a player once crowned England Men’s Player of the Year in 2021. As one online football observer noted on a fan forum, “Phillips career sadly has fallen off a cliff”.
From Manchester City’s perspective, the loan manages a squad asset who remains under contract until 2028. For Sheffield United, it is a short-term gamble on the pedigree of a seasoned campaigner.
As for Kalvin Phillips, it is simply a chance to play football again. “When he will be ready, he will play, because we need him, we need him a lot,” Guardiola once said. At Bramall Lane, Phillips will finally get that chance.
