Aston Villa’s pursuit of success on multiple fronts has been dealt a significant blow with the news that midfielder Youri Tielemans is expected to miss an extended period due to an ankle injury sustained during Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Newcastle United.

The Belgian international was forced off in the 75th minute at St. James’ Park following a challenge from Newcastle’s Lewis Miley.

While initial assessments are underway, the injury is projected to sideline him for approximately two months, deepening a midfield crisis for manager Unai Emery.

The incident occurred during the latter stages of a crucial away win. After receiving attention on the pitch, Tielemans attempted to continue but was ultimately unable to do so, walking around the perimeter before being substituted for Lamare Bogarde.

Speaking immediately after the match, a concerned Emery confirmed the nature of the injury but withheld a prognosis. “It was his ankle,” the Villa boss stated. “Hopefully not a lot, but we must check him with the doctor and wait. I can’t say anything more”. Further scans taken this week are expected to determine the precise extent of the damage.

This setback strikes at the heart of Villa’s squad during a demanding phase of the season. Tielemans has been an undisputed starter when fit, contributing four assists and providing crucial creative influence from the center of the park.

His absence exacerbates an already severe shortage of options in midfield. Key orchestrator Boubacar Kamara is out for the remainder of the campaign, while captain John McGinn is facing another month out with a knee issue. Ross Barkley is nearing a return to training, but the cumulative loss of experience and quality presents a major challenge.

In direct response to this injury crisis, the Villa hierarchy has been compelled to accelerate plans to enter the transfer market before next week’s deadline. The club is actively working on a shock loan move to bring former fan favorite Douglas Luiz back to Villa Park.

The Brazilian midfielder, who made over 200 appearances for Villa before a £42.5 million move to Juventus in 2024, has prior knowledge of Emery’s system and is seen as an ideal candidate to bolster the depleted ranks. Enquiries have also been made regarding AC Milan’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

The timing of this injury could hardly be worse for a team competing in the Premier League’s upper echelons and still involved in European competition. With McGinn also sidelined for around six weeks, Tielemans is not expected to return until after his Scottish teammate, potentially ruling him out of a critical run of fixtures.

This leaves young Lamare Bogarde, who filled in against Newcastle, as a likely short-term option in the pivot alongside Amadou Onana.

For Tielemans personally, the injury represents another frustrating interruption in a season where he had firmly established himself as a central figure in Emery’s project.

After working his way back from a calf issue earlier in the campaign, he had found a rich vein of form, making 11 consecutive league appearances with at least one chance created prior to the Newcastle match. His anticipated lengthy absence now poses a significant test of Aston Villa’s squad depth and resilience as they aim to sustain their impressive progress under Unai Emery.
