Slot Confirms Ekitike Hamstring Injury Ahead of Crucial Arsenal Clash

With the transfer window now open, Ekitike’s hamstring issue will inevitably intensify calls for the club to enter the market to secure attacking reinforcements.

In a development that presents a significant challenge to Liverpool’s Premier League ambitions, head coach Arne Slot has confirmed that in-form striker Hugo Ekitike has sustained a hamstring injury, casting serious doubt over his availability for the upcoming pivotal clash against league leaders Arsenal.

The injury, described by the club as a “minor fitness issue,” forced the French international to miss Sunday’s away fixture at Fulham, a match that ended in a 2-2 draw, and leaves Slot grappling with a deepening attacking crisis just as the season enters its most demanding phase.

The strain is a direct consequence of an unsustainable workload thrust upon the young forward. Slot, speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the kick-off at Craven Cottage, directly linked the injury to the extended absence of fellow striker Alexander Isak, who suffered a significant broken leg against Tottenham in December.

“Alexander Isak has been out for a few weeks now,” Slot explained. “That has meant that Hugo had to play more minutes than he did throughout the whole season. That has led to the fact that he picked up a slight hamstring injury, because we had to play him more and more and more minutes”.

The manager expanded on the physical toll, noting the unique pressures of English football for a new arrival. “For a player that’s his age and is not used to the Premier League completely, that has been a bit too much”. This assessment is not new from Slot, who has previously highlighted the intense adaptation required.

After a match in which Ekitike suffered from cramp, Slot observed, “The biggest adaptation if you come from abroad is this league and how intense it is,” pointing out that players like Ekitike were sometimes “hardly able to keep on running” after seventy minutes.

Ekitike’s absence against Fulham necessitated a makeshift forward line, with Cody Gakpo, himself recently returning from a muscle issue, deployed centrally in a front three also featuring Dominik Szoboszlai and Florian Wirtz. While Gakpo scored and Wirtz continued his impressive form with another goal, the structural lack of a natural focal point was evident. The situation underscores the severe depletion of Slot’s attacking resources.

The long-term injury to record signing Alexander Isak, who is not expected back until late in the season, coupled with Mohamed Salah’s ongoing participation in the Africa Cup of Nations, has stripped the squad of its primary offensive trio. Ekitike, the £125 million summer signing, had risen admirably to the challenge in recent weeks, becoming the team’s indispensable figure.

He had started ten of Liverpool’s previous thirteen games and played 517 of the last 540 minutes of action prior to his injury. His contribution has been decisive, with the Frenchman having a direct hand in six of Liverpool’s last ten goals, scoring five and providing one assist in a rich vein of form that included goals in five of his last six Premier League appearances.

The immediate focus now shifts to a decision of risk versus reward regarding the trip to the Emirates Stadium on Thursday. When pressed on Ekitike’s chances of facing Arsenal, Slot’s tone was notably cautious and lacking in optimism. “That’s why he will be out for today and hopefully be back for the Arsenal game. But that’s definitely not sure yet,” he stated ahead of the Fulham match.

In further comments, he emphasized the medical protocols and the broader schedule, making clear that no chances would be taken. “It is hard to say if he’s back for the next one but it’s not a serious injury as if he’s out for as long as Alex [Isak] is out,” Slot clarified. He elaborated on the decision-making process, stating, “You never risk a player because you always listen to the medical staff and the player himself. But we have to take into account that there are a lot of games to be played in the upcoming weeks and months. In this moment we have one striker already being out so we have to make the right decision for the next one against Arsenal. If he’s ready, he’s ready. If not somebody else needs to play”.

This injury dilemma brings Ekitike’s season full circle in a way that highlights his ongoing development. The 23-year-old’s campaign has been a mix of breathtaking promise and youthful indiscretion. Earlier in the season, he received a red card for two needless yellow cards, one for throwing the ball away and another for an excessive celebration, an incident Slot bluntly branded “needless and stupid”.

At the time, the manager delivered a stern lesson in professionalism, telling Ekitike that unless he scored a spectacular winner in a Champions League final, he should celebrate by thanking the teammate who provided the assist. Since that moment, Ekitike has channeled his passion into his performances, evolving into the team’s most reliable goal threat and showing the physical progression Slot demands.

After a game where Ekitike played through cramp, Slot pointed to it as evidence of growing toughness, noting, “Hugo had cramp today but I can assure you he did twice as much at the beginning of the season when I had to take him off with cramp as well”.

The broader context of a congested January schedule means Slot’s management of his entire squad is under the microscope. He referenced the need to carefully manage other players returning from injury, such as Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley, acknowledging the fine line between fitness and fatigue.

With the transfer window now open, Ekitike’s hamstring issue will inevitably intensify calls for the club to enter the market to secure attacking reinforcements. However, any move would be a short-term solution for a problem that, in an ideal world, would be solved by the return of a key player.
