In the tense final moments of a goalless Premier League clash between title contenders, a moment of controversy has ignited a debate about sportsmanship, frustration, and the modern game’s darker tactics.
Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli found himself at the center of a storm after attempting to push an injured Liverpool defender Conor Bradley off the pitch, an act swiftly condemned by pundits as “disgraceful” but later met with a personal apology and nuanced explanations from both managers.
The incident occurred deep into stoppage time at a rain-swept Emirates Stadium on Thursday night. With Arsenal pressing for a late winner, Liverpool’s 22-year-old full-back Bradley fell to the turf, clutching his left knee after an awkward landing near the touchline.
In a flash of frustration, Martinelli first dropped the ball onto the prone player before trying to physically shove him off the field so play could restart, sparking an immediate confrontation between players from both sides. The Brazilian winger received a yellow card for his actions, while Bradley, who had earlier struck the crossbar in the match, was eventually stretchered off and left the stadium on crutches wearing a supportive knee brace.
Reaction from television pundits, many of them former players, was instantaneous and severe. Speaking on Sky Sports, Gary Neville did not mince words during his commentary. “You can’t push him off the pitch! You cannot do that. That is so poor. I think an apology is needed,” Neville said.
“Bradley is being stretchered off. I’m fuming with Martinelli to be honest. Disgraceful”. Fellow analyst and former Manchester United captain Roy Keane echoed the sentiment in post-match analysis, labeling Martinelli’s behavior “an absolute disgrace.”
He elaborated, “Throwing the ball at him, standing over him and getting a little knee on him. He tries to force him off… Hopefully, Martinelli will have a look at it and hopefully, he’ll apologise for it”. Former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge called the actions “disrespectful” and “probably worse than disrespectful,” acknowledging that while passion is part of the game, respect for an injured opponent must remain paramount.

Facing significant backlash, Martinelli moved quickly to make amends. Taking to his Instagram account, the Arsenal forward revealed he had directly contacted Bradley.
“Conor and I have messaged and I have already apologised to him,” Martinelli wrote. “I really didn’t understand he was seriously injured in the heat of the moment. I want to say I’m deeply sorry for reacting. Sending Conor all my best again for a quick recovery”.
His manager, Mikel Arteta, had already stepped in to defend his player’s character in the post-match press conference. “Knowing Gabi, if anybody knows Gabi, he’s an incredible, lovely guy, and probably he didn’t realise what happened,” Arteta stated, adding that there was “no intention” from Martinelli to cause harm.
Perhaps the most notable perspective came from the opposing camp. Liverpool manager Arne Slot, while expressing grave concern for Bradley, saying he feared “the worst” and that the injury “doesn’t look good”, offered a remarkable defense of Martinelli’s mindset.
Slot contextualized the incident within a broader frustration with time-wasting tactics prevalent in modern football. “I don’t know Gabriel Martinelli but he comes across as a nice guy,” Slot said. “The problem in general in football is that there’s so much time-wasting and players pretending to be injured… I’m a hundred per cent sure that if he knew what the injury might be, he would never do that. You cannot expect Martinelli to think so clearly in the 94th minute”.
He admitted that his own team has been subjected to such tactics frequently, leading to a climate where genuine injuries can be met with suspicion.
The professional fallout from the altercation was overshadowed by concern for Bradley’s condition, with scans pending to determine the severity of the knee injury. On the pitch, the 0-0 draw had title implications, extending Arsenal’s lead at the top to six points over Manchester City, though it represented a missed opportunity to pull further ahead after City dropped points earlier in the week.
The incident, however, transcended the single point. It laid bare the simmering tensions and gamesmanship at the highest level of sport, where the relentless pursuit of victory can sometimes clash with fundamental respect.
