Manchester United’s resurgent form under interim manager Michael Carrick has been dealt a severe setback with confirmation that in-form winger Patrick Dorgu is expected to miss approximately 10 weeks of action due to a significant hamstring injury.

The 21-year-old sustained the injury during the dramatic closing stages of United’s pivotal 3-2 victory away to league leaders Arsenal this past Sunday.

The injury represents what one club correspondent described as “a cruel blow to both United and the player himself,” arriving at the peak of Dorgu’s contributions since his £25 million move from Lecce just over a year ago.

After initially struggling for consistency as a wing-back under former coach Ruben Amorim, Dorgu had been spectacularly reinvented by Carrick in a more advanced left-wing role within a 4-2-3-1 formation.

His stunning half-volley against Arsenal marked his third goal in five appearances, following a decisive strike in the Manchester derby the previous weekend and a Goal of the Month contender against Newcastle United on Boxing Day.

The initial hope within the club was for a minor issue. Immediately after the match, Carrick told reporters, “He came off with hopefully a little bit of cramp, but hopefully it’s nothing worse… At this stage it’s hard to tell. We’ll just have to wait and see but for sure we’re hoping that it’s not too bad”.

However, subsequent scans revealed a more serious hamstring tear, with a projected recovery timeline that would sideline Dorgu for the club’s next eight matches. Barring setbacks, he is now targeting a return around the April international break, potentially making his comeback in a fixture against Leeds United on April 11.

While the injury is significant, analysis suggests a silver lining: the player is not expected to require surgery, which typically indicates a grade two tear rather than the most severe grade three injury that can require up to six months of rehabilitation.

The ten-week prognosis, while a “hammer blow” to United’s tactical plans, is consistent with recovery from such a muscular injury for a young, fit athlete.

Dorgu’s absence creates an immediate selection dilemma for Carrick, who has seen the Dane become integral to his system. Matheus Cunha is the most likely candidate to be restored to the starting lineup on the left flank, with Benjamin Sesko also providing an option after replacing Dorgu at the Emirates.

The injury further depletes United’s squad, which is already without key defender Matthijs de Ligt due to a long-term back issue.

For Patrick Dorgu, the timing is particularly devastating, interrupting what was a definitive breakthrough period in his Premier League career.

For a Manchester United side riding a wave of momentum with crucial wins over Manchester City and Arsenal, his loss will test the squad’s depth and Carrick’s managerial ingenuity during a critical stretch of the season.
