Manchester United’s preparation for Saturday’s pivotal Manchester derby received a significant uplift on Wednesday as attackers Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo returned to first-team training at Carrington.
Their comeback coincided with Michael Carrick’s inaugural session as interim manager, providing a timely double boost for a club seeking to reverse a winless start to 2026 and reignite their Premier League campaign.
The duo had been on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations, where both their nations, Cameroon and Ivory Coast, suffered quarter-final eliminations last weekend. Their return ends a six-game absence for the pair, a period during which United managed just a single victory and were eliminated from the FA Cup, underscoring their importance to the side.
While fellow defender Noussair Mazraoui remains with host nation Morocco for the tournament’s concluding stages, the immediate reintegration of Mbeumo and Amad offers Carrick crucial attacking options for his first match in charge.

Carrick, appointed on Tuesday to steer the team until the season’s end following the dismissal of Rúben Amorim, expressed his commitment to reviving the squad’s fortunes. “Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honour,” Carrick stated. “I know what it takes to succeed here, my focus is now on helping the players to reach the standards that we expect at this incredible club”.
The new manager’s task has been made easier by the return of two of his most potent forwards. Mbeumo, the club’s top scorer this season with seven goals since his summer move from Brentford, and Amad, who scored the memorable winner in last season’s derby at the Etihad, have contributed nine goals between them in the 2025/26 campaign.
Their absence was acutely felt, with the team’s goal output halving from an average of 2.4 per game before their departure for AFCON to just 1.2 in the matches they missed. Recent performances highlighted the specific shortage in quality on the right flank, a problem their natural positions directly address.
Amad, in particular, returns in strong individual form after a standout continental tournament where he netted three goals for Ivory Coast.
The stage is now set for a dramatic restart at Old Trafford. United, currently seventh and three points off the top four, host a Manchester City side that has recently stumbled with three consecutive draws.
For Carrick, the availability of Mbeumo and Amad not only solves an immediate selection headache but also symbolizes a fresh start and a renewed threat as United aim to salvage their season with a statement victory against their historic rivals.
