Semenyo faced rejections after unsuccessful trials with Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Millwall, and an eight-week stint at Crystal Palace at age 15, nearly quitting the sport. At 18, he enrolled in the football program at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College (SGS College), catching Bristol City’s attention during pre-season.

Academy director Brian Tinnion signed him for their youth setup in 2017, where he signed his first professional contract at 17 and progressed through U18 and U23 teams.

Loan spells honed his skills; Newport County (League Two, 2018-19) for first-team experience, and a brief Sunderland stint. These built his physicality and adaptability before his Bristol City senior breakthrough in 2019. By 2021-22, he earned Young Player of the Year honors after 50 appearances, 5 goals, and 7 assists.


Club career

Semenyo’s club career started at Bristol City after joining their academy in 2017 from SGS College, following early rejections from bigger London clubs. He signed his first professional contract and debuted in the Championship during 2017-18, making one appearance.

Loan spells followed; Bath City (National League South, 14 apps, 6 goals in 2017-18), Newport County (League Two, 32 apps, 6 goals in 2018-19), and a brief Sunderland stint (7 apps in 2019-20).His Bristol City breakthrough came in 2020-21 with 50 appearances, 5 goals across competitions, earning EFL Cup and FA Cup strikes.

The 2021-22 season peaked with 32 Championship apps, 8 goals, Young Player of the Year award, and January Player of the Month honors. In 2022-23, despite 27 apps and 8 goals, he transferred to Bournemouth mid-season for a record fee, ending 125 Bristol apps with 21 goals.

At Bournemouth, Semenyo debuted in the Premier League in January 2023. His 2022-23 haul included 11 apps and 1 goal amid relegation fight. Promotion followed in 2022-23 playoffs.

Back in the top flight, 2023-24 brought 36 apps, 8 goals; 2024-25 saw 42 apps, 13 goals; and 2025-26 delivered 21 apps, 10 goals before his £62.5m move to Manchester City on January 9, 2026.

International career

Semenyo’s international career with Ghana began in 2022 after choosing the Black Stars over England, leveraging his Ghanaian parental heritage despite a London birth. Called up on May 26, he debuted as a substitute in a 3–0 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier win over Madagascar on June 1.

On November 14, Semenyo made Ghana’s 26-man squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He scored his first international goal in a 2–0 friendly win against Switzerland on November 17, then featured as a substitute in group games versus Portugal and Uruguay, where Ghana exited early.

His first competitive goal arrived in stoppage time during a 1–0 AFCON qualifier victory over Angola on March 23, 2023.

Selected for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in January 2024, he started all three group matches as Ghana drew twice and lost once, failing to advance. Semenyo has since earned over 30 caps, solidifying his role through World Cup qualifiers and AFCON preparations.


Accolades

Semenyo has earned several individual accolades throughout his career, primarily at club level with Bristol City and Bournemouth, alongside international tournament participations.

At Bristol City, he won the club’s Young Player of the Year award in May 2021 after a breakout 2020-21 season with 50 appearances, 5 goals, and 7 assists. In January 2022, he claimed the EFL Championship Player of the Month for scoring three goals and providing three assists.

With Bournemouth, Semenyo received the PFA Premier League Fans’ Player of the Month for September 2025, recognizing his strong form. Bournemouth fans voted him their Player of the Month for September 2025, the first of the 2025-26 season.

He was named to the 2025 Premier League Fan Team of the Year, reflecting his impact with 10 goals in 20 games that season.

In November 2025, Semenyo won SWAG Male Footballer of the Year for international players at Ghana’s 50th SWAG Awards. Internationally, he participated in the 2022 World Cup and 2024 Africa Cup of Nations with Ghana.


Parents and siblings

Semenyo’s father, Larry Semenyo, is a former professional footballer who played as a midfielder for Okwawu United in the Ghana Premier League. His mother, also of Ghanaian descent, Vida or Dela Dzebu Semenyo, holds French citizenship, which Antoine inherited.

Antoine has a younger brother, Jai Semenyo, who is also a professional footballer, most recently playing for National League side Eastleigh.

Semenyo’s fiancée is Jordeen Buckley, a London-based model and social media influencer. The Ghana forward proposed to her in November 2025 after leaving the Black Stars camp due to an ankle injury, sharing the moment with an engagement ring reveal on her Instagram.

Buckley celebrated Semenyo’s 25th birthday in January 2025 with public posts, calling him her love. Described as a “TikTok bombshell,” she gained attention for her glamorous style during their engagement announcement.
