Early life and background

Tom BĂźdgen grew up in Alkmaar, a small Dutch city known for its medieval charm and rich cultural traditions. From a young age, he developed a deep interest in martial arts, which would later become a defining element of his wrestling style.

He trained in disciplines such as kickboxing and pencak silat, developing a striking-based combat approach that would eventually translate seamlessly into the squared circle.

His early exposure to alternative culture and philosophy also shaped his identity, giving birth to the dark, introspective persona that would later evolve into Aleister Black.

During his teenage years, BĂźdgen began exploring professional wrestling, inspired by both the athletic spectacle and the psychological storytelling the sport offered.

The blend of physical challenge and creative expression appealed to him, and he soon started competing in local wrestling circuits across Europe.

Career Beginnings

Before adopting the name Aleister Black, Tom BĂźdgen wrestled under the moniker Tommy End on the European independent wrestling scene.

He spent more than a decade honing his craft across numerous promotions, including Westside Xtreme Wrestling (wXw) in Germany, Progress Wrestling and Insane Championship Wrestling in the United Kingdom, Revolution Pro Wrestling, and even Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW) in the United States.

His performances combined disciplined striking with technical precision, earning him respect from both fans and peers.

During his tenure on the independent circuit, Büdgen captured several championships, including the wXw Unified World Wrestling Championship and the wXw World Tag Team Championship. His ability to adapt to different audiences and wrestling styles helped him build a reputation as one of Europe’s most complete and compelling in-ring performers.

The persona of Tommy End, mysterious and quietly intense, laid the groundwork for what would become Aleister Black, a darker, more psychological evolution of his wrestling identity.

By 2016, his growing international reputation drew the attention of WWE. The company signed him to a developmental contract, and he joined its NXT brand, WWE’s highly regarded training and performance platform.

Repackaged as Aleister Black, he debuted with an aura of mysticism, complete with haunting entrance music, ritualistic tattoos, and a calm yet menacing demeanor. His debut at NXT TakeOver: Orlando in 2017 marked the beginning of a new chapter that would define his career.

Rise to fame and breakthrough

Aleister Black’s arrival in WWE’s NXT immediately set him apart. His entrance, shrouded in darkness and smoke, became one of the most iconic visuals in modern wrestling, while his “Black Mass” spinning heel kick established itself as one of the most devastating finishing moves in the business.

He quickly became a fan favorite, combining the authenticity of a fighter with the theatrics of a gothic antihero.

His breakout moment came in 2018 at NXT TakeOver: New Orleans, where he defeated Andrade “Cien” Almas to capture the NXT Championship. This victory cemented his place among the brand’s elite competitors.

As champion, he defended the title in physically demanding matches against challengers like Lars Sullivan and Eric Young, showcasing his resilience, creativity, and striking precision.

His reign elevated the NXT brand during a time when it was known for producing some of the most technically gifted and charismatic wrestlers in the world.

Following his success in NXT, Black transitioned to WWE’s main roster, where he competed on both Raw and SmackDown.

Though his main roster run faced inconsistent booking, he delivered standout performances against top stars such as AJ Styles, Kevin Owens, and Buddy Murphy.

Major achievements and career highlights

Throughout his career, Aleister Black has achieved success in multiple major promotions around the world. His crowning moment in WWE came as NXT Champion, a reign that solidified his credibility as both a performer and storyteller.

He was also voted NXT Male Competitor of the Year and Breakout Star of the Year in 2017, reflecting both his in-ring excellence and the strong emotional connection he established with fans.

In 2021, following his departure from WWE, BĂźdgen made his highly anticipated debut in AEW under the ring name Malakai Black.

His debut shocked fans when he appeared unannounced and delivered his Black Mass finisher to both Arn Anderson and Cody Rhodes, signaling the beginning of a darker, more theatrical chapter in his career.

As Malakai Black, he became the founder and leader of the House of Black, a faction that blended psychological storytelling with gothic visual presentation.

Under his leadership, the House of Black won the AEW World Trios Championship in 2023, alongside Brody King and Buddy Matthews. The trio’s dominant run showcased Büdgen’s ability to reinvent himself while staying true to the creative spirit that defined his career.

His matches against Cody Rhodes, Darby Allin, and Adam Copeland further demonstrated his adaptability and enduring skill as a performer.

In April 2025, Aleister Black made a dramatic return to WWE, attacking The Miz in a surprise appearance that reignited excitement among fans.

His comeback was viewed as a symbolic full circle, the return of a performer who had mastered multiple worlds of wrestling while remaining true to his unique identity.

Personal life

Outside the ring, Tom BĂźdgen is married to professional wrestler Thea Trinidad, known to wrestling fans as Zelina Vega. The couple married in 2018 and have often spoken about their shared passion for fitness, spirituality, and creative expression.

BĂźdgen is known for his disciplined approach to training and his interest in meditation and philosophy, which he integrates into his professional persona.

He has also been open about his fascination with occult symbolism, personal evolution, and the power of belief systems, elements that heavily influence his character’s themes and imagery.
