Rodri Withdrawn from Spain Squad as Precaution Over Fitness Concerns

This development comes amid ongoing concerns about Rodri’s ability to sustain high-intensity match loads after an extended injury layoff spanning much of the previous season.

In a decision that has reverberated through both club and country, Rodri will not be joining the Spain squad for the upcoming international window, with the national federation confirming that the Manchester City midfielder is being withdrawn on medical precaution.

According to a statement issued by the Spanish federation, the decision is precautionary, with both Spain’s medical department and Manchester City’s medical team aligned in prioritizing Rodri’s long-term health over short-term participation.

This development comes amid ongoing concerns about Rodri’s ability to sustain high-intensity match loads after an extended injury layoff spanning much of the previous season. He tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and also suffered meniscal damage in September 2024, a setback that sidelined him for several months.

Though he gradually returned to action, his rehabilitation has been carefully managed. In recent weeks, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has publicly warned that Rodri is not yet ready to cope with the demands of playing three matches in a week.

Speaking ahead of a recent Premier League match, Guardiola said, “In my opinion, he is not able to play three games a week at top, top level. My feeling is that right now he is not ready.” The City boss went on to add that “this type of injury is minimum one year before a player can fully handle the intensity again.” His comments highlight the importance of patience in Rodri’s recovery and underline the reasons both club and country have agreed to limit his workload.

From Spain’s perspective, the timing of his withdrawal is particularly sensitive. The national team faces crucial World Cup qualifying fixtures, and Rodri has been a cornerstone of their midfield structure for years. His absence will force coach Luis de la Fuente to rethink his plans and adjust his squad accordingly.

Spain’s federation emphasized that withdrawing Rodri now is a unified decision, made after assessing medical data and in the interest of both the player and the national side.

Just a few weeks ago, Rodri and veteran right-back Dani Carvajal had been recalled to the Spanish squad as they resumed fitness after prolonged absences. The recent withdrawal, therefore, is less about form or tactics and more about managing the fine margins of recovery from a major injury.

The federation’s choice of the word “precautionary” rather than labeling the situation an “injury” reflects a desire to maintain flexibility and optimism regarding his quick return once fully fit.

Rodri’s absence deprives Spain of a player who has become synonymous with their midfield stability and tactical rhythm. Over recent years, he has served as the pivot through which Spain builds possession, initiates transitions, and maintains control in tight games. His precise passing, positional intelligence, and defensive awareness make him one of the most dependable players in world football.

Manchester City, too, has had to tread cautiously around his minutes to avoid any relapse. Guardiola and his coaching staff have rotated Rodri more frequently than in previous seasons, seeking to balance his contribution with long-term sustainability.
