Inter Miami CF defender Jordi Alba has confirmed that he will retire from professional football at the end of the 2025 Major League Soccer season, bringing to a close a storied career that spanned top-flight competition in Spain and the United States.
In a statement shared through his official social media channels, Alba said: “The time has come to close a truly meaningful chapter in my life. I’ve decided to bring my professional football career to an end at the conclusion of this season. I do so with complete conviction, with peace, and with happiness because I feel I’ve walked this path with every ounce of passion I had, and now it’s the right moment to open a new chapter and close the previous one with the best possible feeling.”
He also added: “This has been a thoughtful decision I’ve considered for a long time. I feel it’s the right moment to begin a new personal chapter and fully enjoy time with my family after so many demanding years in professional football. I’m very happy with my time at Inter Miami and truly grateful for the support of the fans. Now my goal is to finish the season in the best possible way, giving my all in the playoffs.”
Alba first joined Inter Miami in July 2023, forming part of the much-publicized migration of former Barcelona stars to the club, alongside Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Luis Suárez. During his tenure in South Florida, he has become a fixture in the lineup, contributing significantly in both goals and assists to help the club in domestic competition.
His club, Inter Miami, praised him as “a key part of the team” and noted that his consistency, experience, and technical quality have cemented his role in the squad.

For Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas, Alba’s impact extended beyond on-field results. “His experience, consistency, and attacking contribution have been very important to the Club’s success. Beyond the goals and assists, he has been a great asset within the team and an exemplary professional,” Mas said. “Jordi will forever be part of our Inter Miami family, and we wish him all the happiness in this new stage of his life.”
The announcement comes less than two weeks after Sergio Busquets confirmed his own retirement at the end of this season, marking a simultaneous farewell by two of Messi’s longtime Barcelona teammates at the same club. The timing is all the more striking because Alba signed a contract extension with Inter Miami earlier in 2025 that was due to run through 2027. However, his decision to retire effectively rescinds that longer deal.
Throughout his career, Alba earned his reputation as one of the finest left-backs of his generation, known for his pace, attacking instincts, and ability to link play in wide areas. In Spain, he won multiple La Liga titles, Copa del Rey trophies, and the UEFA Champions League with Barcelona. Internationally, he earned 93 caps with the Spanish national team and was part of Spain’s victorious 2012 European Championship squad.
In Major League Soccer, Alba helped Miami win the 2024 Supporters’ Shield and was also instrumental in their Leagues Cup campaign. Across all competitions since arriving in the U.S., he recorded 14 goals and 38 assists.
