World Athletics has formally ratified three outstanding world records set earlier this season by Beatrice Chebet, Mykolas Alekna, and Mondo Duplantis, cementing their historic achievements just ahead of the World Championships in Tokyo.
Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet made history by becoming the first woman ever to run the 5000m in under 14 minutes.
Her remarkable 13:58.06 performance at the Wanda Diamond League in Eugene on Saturday, 5 July, has now been officially recognised as the world record, surpassing Gudaf Tsegay’s 14:00.21 set in 2023.
Chebet, who also holds the 10,000m world record, clocked 8:22.96 at the 3000m split before powering to the finish line, slicing 2.15 seconds off the previous best.
“I’m so happy to become the first woman to run under 14 minutes,” Chebet said after her record-breaking race. “After Rome, where I ran 14:03, I knew I was capable of a world record. It feels amazing to see my hard work pay off and to make history for Kenya.”

In the men’s discus, Lithuania’s Mykolas Alekna also had his remarkable double record-breaking effort ratified at the Oklahoma Throws Series World Invitational in Ramona.
On Sunday, 13 April, the Olympic silver medallist opened with a 74.89m throw, surpassing his own world record, before extending it to 75.56m in the fourth round. Both marks have now been officially recognised.
The competition was extraordinary, with five athletes exceeding 70 metres, and Australia’s Matt Denny also surpassing Alekna’s previous record with a 74.78m throw.
Sweden’s Mondo Duplantis, the Olympic pole vault champion, also saw his latest achievement officially confirmed. At the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting in Budapest on 12 August, he cleared 6.29m, setting his 13th world pole vault record.
This improved on his 6.28m jump in Stockholm in June, further cementing his dominance in the event.
With these ratifications, Chebet, Alekna, and Duplantis head into the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, scheduled from Saturday, 13 to Sunday, 21 September 2025, carrying exceptional momentum and aiming to transform their record-breaking form into global titles.
