AFC Leopards’ newest signing, Ugandan striker Samuel Ssenyonjo, has set an ambitious target ahead of the new season: scoring over 30 goals and helping the club finally lift silverware after years of near misses.
Ssenyonjo is one of nine new recruits brought in during the recently concluded transfer window, a clear signal of Leopards’ intent to revive their glory days. The club has not won a major trophy since 2017, while a league title has eluded them since 1998, placing immense pressure on the forward to deliver on the pitch.
Fans got an early glimpse of his potential on Sunday at Dandora Stadium, where Leopards defeated Zanzibar’s New Kings FC 4-2 in their opening pre-season friendly.
After an earlier effort was ruled out for offside, Ssenyonjo came off the bench to score, leaving supporters excited about what he could bring to Fred Ambani’s squad this season.
Reflecting on his move, Ssenyonjo said the club’s history played a major role in his decision. “The history of the club is rich, and Leopards are one of the biggest teams in Kenya. I was excited to join a club with such ambitions, a club that wants to win every game, and that motivated me to come to Kenya,” he explained.
The striker also credited his teammates for helping him settle in quickly. “My teammates have been very supportive throughout preseason. They have helped me settle, and right now I am comfortable and enjoying my time here.”
With preparations for the new campaign in full swing, Ssenyonjo laid out his personal and team goals clearly. “The goal is to score as many goals as possible so that we can achieve something. The team’s objective is to win trophies, and my personal target is to score 30 goals or more.”
Leopards will kick off their FKF Premier League season against Sofapaka FC on 20 September, with fans eager to see if Ssenyonjo can fulfill his lofty promise and spearhead the club back to glory.
