Nottingham Forest Turn to Ange Postecoglou After Nuno’s Departure

Former Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou is set to replace Nuno Espírito Santo as Nottingham Forest head coach. The announcement came early on Tuesday, following the dismissal of Espírito Santo amid mounting tensions within the club hierarchy.

Espírito Santo, who guided Forest through a remarkable 2024–25 season—culminating in a seventh-place Premier League finish and Europa League qualification—was relieved of his duties following a fractious relationship with club owner Evangelos Marinakis.

The Portuguese coach had openly acknowledged that his rapport with the owner had deteriorated. “I cannot say that is the same, because it’s not the same,” he remarked in recent weeks, signaling the breakdown.

Underlying the departure were also reported disagreements with Forest’s newly appointed head of global football, Edu, as well as growing frustration over the club’s sluggish transfer dealings. Such tensions, combined with a 3–0 defeat to West Ham and a breakdown in communication with the owner, ultimately led to the decision.

Despite these issues, Nottingham Forest’s statement thanked Espírito Santo for his contributions, noting that his achievements—particularly the club’s standout 2024–25 performance—“will forever be remembered fondly.”

Taking the reins in his place is Ange Postecoglou, a charismatic and tactically progressive Australian coach known for his dynamic, attacking football. Having guided Tottenham Hotspur to a Europa League triumph earlier this year, he was nonetheless dismissed in June following a disappointing 17th-place league finish.

Sources indicate that Postecoglou enjoys a close personal connection with club owner Marinakis—a relationship perhaps strengthened by their shared Greek heritage. Marinakis has publicly lauded Postecoglou’s success in Europe, observing how his achievements have resonated on a national level. “What he achieved, he did with a team that has not won any titles… he promoted Greece,” Marinakis said when presenting him with an award in Greece. “Wherever he goes, the successes will come.”

Postecoglou, who was officially set for a swift return to the Premier League after his Spurs exit, expressed a strong desire to return to English football and reportedly has unfinished business in England. His appointment is expected to be confirmed imminently, with his first match likely to be against Arsenal this Saturday.

This appointment marks an eagerly anticipated shift in direction for Forest. Postecoglou’s playing philosophy is markedly different from the more conservative approach taken by his predecessor.

Where Espírito Santo focused on stability and structure, Postecoglou favors high-intensity pressing and expansive, proactive play. The change signals Forest owner Marinakis’s ambition to push the club toward a more vibrant, entertaining brand of football.

For Forest fans, the timing of the change is delicate. The club is currently 10th in the Premier League and preparing for European competition in the Europa League. There is optimism that Postecoglou’s ethos could galvanize the squad, though the margin for error is slim. As one pundit noted, Forest are keen to instill “a more attacking, proactive style of football.”
