Chelsea Football Club has confirmed the acquisition of Argentine midfielder Facundo Buonanotte on a season-long loan from Brighton & Hove Albion. The 20-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge with a growing reputation and a wealth of experience for his age, having already made significant strides in the Premier League and on the international stage.

The loan deal, which includes a £2 million fee, does not carry an option to buy, indicating that Chelsea views Buonanotte as a short-term addition to bolster their attacking options.

This move marks Chelsea’s tenth signing of the summer transfer window and their fifth addition to the attacking department, underscoring the club’s intent to strengthen their squad depth ahead of a demanding season across multiple competitions.

Buonanotte’s journey to Chelsea began at Rosario Central, his boyhood club in Argentina, where he made his professional debut in February 2022. His performances caught the eye of European scouts, leading to a move to Brighton in January 2023.

During his time with the Seagulls, Buonanotte showcased his versatility and technical ability, making 40 appearances and scoring four goals. In the 2024–25 season, he was loaned to Leicester City, where he further honed his skills, netting five goals in 31 appearances.

Internationally, Buonanotte has represented Argentina at various youth levels and earned his first senior cap in 2023. His inclusion in the national team, despite his young age, speaks volumes about his potential and the faith placed in him by the Argentine Football Association.

At Chelsea, Buonanotte is expected to provide competition for Cole Palmer in the attacking midfield role. His ability to operate as a No.10 or as a winger adds flexibility to Chelsea’s attacking options, allowing manager Enzo Maresca to employ a variety of tactical setups. Buonanotte’s left-footedness and creativity are attributes that Chelsea will look to harness, especially in a season where they aim to compete across four fronts.

Upon completing his move, Buonanotte expressed his enthusiasm about joining Chelsea, stating, “I’m very happy to join Chelsea. It’s a great opportunity for me, and I’m just looking to add as much to the squad as possible, help the team, and help the staff.”

Brighton’s head coach, Fabian Hurzeler, also commented on Buonanotte’s departure, acknowledging the player’s potential and the club’s long-term vision. “Facundo has great potential, and we see his long-term future with us here. We will be monitoring his progress with Chelsea this season,” Hurzeler remarked, indicating that Brighton remains invested in Buonanotte’s development.

The move has garnered attention not only for Buonanotte’s talent but also due to the growing relationship between Chelsea and Brighton in the transfer market. This partnership has seen several players move between the two clubs in recent years, with Chelsea often looking to Brighton for emerging talents.

Chelsea’s acquisition of Buonanotte is part of a broader strategy to rejuvenate their squad with young, dynamic talent. The club’s summer transfer activity has been extensive, with notable signings such as João Pedro, Estevão, and Alejandro Garnacho, aiming to build a team capable of challenging for top honors domestically and in Europe.
