Kenya’s top-flight football clubs have been handed a huge financial boost after the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) confirmed that the prize money for the Premier League has been significantly increased.
For the upcoming 2025/26 campaign, the total pool has been set at Ksh20 million — a fourfold rise compared to the Ksh5 million previously available.
The new structure means the eventual champions will pocket Ksh15 million, up from the earlier Ksh5 million, while the runners-up and third-placed teams will earn Ksh3 million and Ksh2 million respectively.
The announcement was made by FKF President Hussein Mohammed during the official launch of the season on Tuesday, September 16.
“When we were elected into office eight months ago. I promised the clubs that we will significantly increase the league’s prize money. Today, I am happy to announce an increase in the league’s prize money to Ksh20 million beginning this season. Ksh15 million will go to the winner while Ksh5 million will be distributed to the second and third-ranked teams,” said Mohammed.
In addition to the new prize structure, FKF confirmed that clubs will also retain 60% of the title sponsorship revenue. These funds will be supplemented by the payments already provided by Azam TV, which continues to serve as the official broadcast partner for the third consecutive season.
Mathare United CEO Jecton Obure welcomed the development, stressing that the extra income would provide much-needed relief for clubs struggling with operational costs.
“As clubs, we are grateful for the amount. Running a club is quite expensive. You will need about 65 million to run a top-tier club, and the prize money will take some burden off clubs,” said Obure.
