Tottenham Hotspur has secured the signing of Dutch midfield prodigy Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig in a marquee deal that underscores the club’s ambitious summer transfer strategy. The 22-year-old has joined Spurs for a fee reported to be around £51.8 million (approximately €60 million), signing a long-term contract.
Simons, who dons the No. 7 shirt, emerges as Tottenham’s fifth-most expensive signing ever, according to club records—trailing only Richarlison (£60 million), Ndombele (£55 million), Solanke (£55 million), and Kudus (£55 million). Reports indicate the fee structure includes an initial sum of €65 million plus €5 million in add-ons, cementing him as the club’s most expensive acquisition, surpassing Solanke.
From Leipzig’s perspective, a player who recorded 22 goals and 24 assists across 78 appearances departs amid the club’s failure to qualify for European competition. Leipzig expedited the deal as they pursue Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott as a replacement.
Xavi Simons’ arrival comes amid a whirlwind transfer window at Spurs—the club had lost James Maddison to an ACL injury and missed out on Morgan Gibbs-White, who remained at Nottingham Forest, and Eberechi Eze, who signed for Arsenal. Chelsea, long linked to Simons, notably failed to make a formal bid, allowing Tottenham to seize the initiative.
On the club’s official announcement, Simons expressed palpable excitement: “I’m really happy and can’t wait to get going. I’ve been dreaming of this for a long time. It’s a great Club and when I met the Head Coach I knew straight away that this was the right place for me. I will bring flair to the team but also hard work and discipline. I want to do everything I can to win, for the team and also for the fans.”
Head coach Thomas Frank added, “Xavi has proven his ability to get goals and assists, both from the number 10 position and left-wing. He also has a great eye for his team-mates in terms of unlocking defences.”
Xavi’s footballing roots trace back to Barcelona’s famed La Masia, which laid the foundations for his technical brilliance. He moved to Paris Saint-Germain in 2019, where he debuted at age 17 and collected both a Ligue 1 and Coupe de France title early on.
His real breakout came during his season at PSV Eindhoven in 2022–23, where he netted 19 goals, became Eredivisie top scorer, and helped his side lift the Dutch Cup and Super Cup—earning the league’s Talent of the Season award.
In 2023, Simons joined RB Leipzig on loan from PSG, a move that later became permanent in early 2025. During his time in Germany, his creative and goal contributions grew—culminating in 22 goals and 24 assists in 78 matches, helping him earn a spot in the VDV Bundesliga Team of the Season. His senior debut for the Netherlands came during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and he has since earned 28 caps and scored five goals for his country.
Simons brings versatility—able to operate as a No. 10 or on the wing—and a rare blend of flair, tactical intelligence, and work ethic. Tottenham fans will be hoping he integrates swiftly, especially in Maddison’s absence.
With his shirt number confirmed as 7—a badge worn by notable predecessors like Son Heung-min and Aaron Lennon—expectations are sky-high. Although formal paperwork is complete, Simons may have to wait for his debut due to work permit and registration protocols.
