Tusker FC forward Ryan Ogam has spoken about the significant role Benni McCarthy has played in shaping his career and how the coach inspired him to score during Harambee Stars’ clash with Morocco at the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024).

Called up to replace Austin Odhiambo, who had already scored twice in the tournament, Ogam found the net in the 42nd minute. After that, Harambee Stars focused on maintaining their defensive solidity to secure the lead.

Ogam shared the encouraging words Benni McCarthy gave him as he entered the game and reflected on how crucial the former Manchester United striker has been in his development so far.

He admitted that early in his career, he never envisioned himself as a striker, but thanks to McCarthy’s guidance, he is gradually establishing himself as one of the best in that role.

McCarthy, who once played as a striker, has on several occasions mentioned that Ogam reminds him of his own playing days — an observation the 20-year-old forward finds motivating.

Ogam explained that before facing Morocco, McCarthy urged him to put everything into the game and not to worry about the clock while on the pitch.

This advice clearly paid off, as Ogam concentrated fully on the match and delivered the goal that put Kenya ahead until the final whistle.

“I thank God, and now that I scored the winning goal, my morale is high, and I hope that as we progress, I will continue scoring. I began my career as a defensive midfielder before transitioning to a striker, a position I have played for about a year.

“Benni McCarthy is helping me a lot in terms of training, and he is guiding me to become a better player. I think today the message that I took from him is to give my best on the pitch, even if I played for 45 minutes,” Ogam admitted.

Ogam also highlighted the motivation drawn from the passionate supporters and dedicated the victory to them.

“The support from the fans has been impeccable, and this win is for them. I think when the match progressed, they continued coming out in large numbers,” he revealed.
