Rúben Dias has signed a new contract with Manchester City, keeping the Portuguese centre-back at the club until the summer of 2029. The agreement, confirmed on 22 August 2025, extends Dias’s tenure at the Etihad Stadium to nearly a decade and consolidates his status as a pillar of Pep Guardiola’s squad.
Since his arrival from Benfica in the summer of 2020 for a fee reported to be in the range of €68–70 million, Dias has quickly established himself as one of the Premier League’s premier defenders.
Over the past five seasons, he has amassed more than 200 appearances and contributed to Manchester City’s trophy-laden run, which includes four consecutive Premier League titles, a UEFA Champions League crown in 2023, and multiple domestic and international honours.
Reflecting on the new deal, Dias said, “I’m so proud to represent this great club. City are where I want to be – at the top of the sport, competing for trophies. The club’s ambition aligns perfectly with mine and as a footballer there is nothing better than that.” He expressed his deep connection to Manchester and appreciation for the fans, stating, “I love Manchester – it is my home now – and I love the Manchester City fans. Their support from day one has been absolutely unbelievable, and I appreciate them a lot.”
Dias also underlined his determination to continue delivering at the highest level: “My job now is to be the best I can be for the duration of this contract, so that I can play my part in helping us challenge for more silverware.”
Hugo Viana, Manchester City’s Director of Football, praised Dias as an exemplary professional and leader. “His hard work, professionalism and sheer dedication are clear to all of us every single day,” Viana remarked. “He is a leader in the dressing room and on the pitch. He is one of our captains… the players listen to him and Pep and the coaching staff love working with him.”
Since joining the club, Dias has become a cornerstone of Guardiola’s ever-evolving plans. His impact was immediate: his debut season saw City reclaim the Premier League and reach the Champions League final, earning Dias numerous personal accolades, including Premier League Player of the Season and Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year.
He played a central role in the historic treble-winning campaign of 2022–23 and added more silverware to his collection in subsequent seasons.
Off the pitch, Dias has embraced Manchester as his home. “I feel at home. Manchester feels like peace,” he has said, adding that the emotional and cultural bond he shares with the city and supporters played a role in his decision to extend.
This extension comes at a moment when Manchester City seek to reclaim their domestic dominance following a trophy-less finish in the 2024–25 season—marking only the second such occasion under Guardiola’s regime.
Dias acknowledged the need for renewed focus, saying, “Win, win, win trophies. We want to win. We want to perform good. We want to leave our stamp on every game. But we want to win,” highlighting the motivation driving both him and the club into the new season.
Born in Amadora, Portugal, on 14 May 1997, Rúben Dias rose through Benfica’s youth ranks before making his senior debut in 2017. At Benfica, he earned plaudits for his maturity, leadership, and defensive caliber—qualities that earned him a move to Manchester City.
At City, his arrival marked a turning point in the club’s defensive resolve. Guardiola, recognizing his influence, secured a six-year extension in 2021, tying Dias down until 2027. That deal followed a meteoric debut season full of individual and collective success.
