Harambee Stars goalkeeper Byrne Omondi has praised the influence of South African goalkeeping coach Moneeb Josephs for helping elevate his performances at the ongoing 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) hosted in Kenya.
Brought in as a late addition to the squad, Omondi has swiftly emerged as one of the team’s standout players, recapturing the form that saw him become a first-choice option under former coach Engin Firat in 2023.
Omondi delivered a commanding display in the memorable win over Morocco, earning the Man of the Match award after producing four crucial saves, making two high claims, and marshalling his defence with precision.
After the game, the former Manguo High School student from Limuru credited both Josephs and fellow goalkeepers Farouk Shikhalo and Sepstianos Wekesa for his sharp form.
“The support I have been getting from my fellow goalkeepers, as well as our goalkeeping training, has been massive and has taken my game to another level. That’s why I have been performing at my best so far,” Omondi said.
Josephs, a former South Africa international born in Mitchell’s Plain, Cape Town, enjoyed a stellar career with clubs such as Cape Town Spurs, Ajax Cape Town, Bidvest Wits, and Orlando Pirates, where he became a household name. Since moving into coaching, he has worked with several top sides, including AmaZulu.
Omondi also spoke about what is pushing the team at CHAN 2024, dismissing the idea that financial incentives from President William Ruto are their primary motivation.
“People are fuelled by the fact it’s the first time this tournament is being held in the country. They are motivated and want to do their best,” he explained.
He dedicated his Man of the Match accolade to his family, acknowledging their prayers, calls, and constant encouragement.
“When the game starts, a crucial save gets a goalkeeper fully tuned in. That’s the save that really made me find my rhythm,” Omondi added.
