Harambee Stars midfielder Marvine Nabwire has thrown his full support behind head coach Benni McCarthy ahead of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), voicing strong belief that the team is capable of going all the way.
Nabwire, who played a crucial role in Kenya Police’s 2025 FKF Premier League title win, was recently named in McCarthy’s final 25-man squad for the tournament.
Reflecting on his inclusion, Nabwire described the national team call-up as both an honour and a moment of pride.
“It is a fantastic feeling,” he said. “Everyone wants to represent their country. When you get selected, you need to push yourself because you are representing the country.”
Despite picking up a minor knock in the Harambee Stars’ 4-0 friendly win over his club side Kenya Police, medical staff have since cleared him to play. Meanwhile, teammate and close friend Brian Musa was not as fortunate—he will miss the tournament after suffering a hamstring injury.
“It’s disappointing that Brian won’t be with us,” Nabwire said. “He’s a friend and we understand each other so well on the pitch. But this is football. The competition is stiff, and we all worked hard to be here. Whoever starts will have earned it.”
Kenya has been drawn in a tough Group A alongside DR Congo, Morocco, Angola, and Zambia. While many have counted out the Harambee Stars’ chances, Nabwire believes the team’s co-hosting status provides an important psychological boost.
“I cannot say it is a group of death,” he said. “As a player, you have to be ready. We are not underdogs because we are co-hosting the tournament. We believe we can do it.”
All of Kenya’s group stage matches will be held at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani—a fact Nabwire sees as an exciting chance to perform under the spotlight.
“It is a good opportunity to sell myself and go professional because many scouts and clubs will be watching us. The fans should support us, and we’ll do our best to make them proud.”
McCarthy’s leadership has been praised throughout the national camp, with players citing his tactical acumen and motivational approach. Nabwire, in particular, has found inspiration under the South African tactician.
“We have learnt a lot from Benni. He is one of the best coaches in Africa, and I am sure that under his guidance, we have the capability and potential to actually win this cup.”
