The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has suspended ticket sales for all upcoming fixtures at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, following serious safety and security breaches during the Harambee Stars’ match against Morocco on Sunday, August 10.
The high-stakes African Nations Championship (CHAN) encounter was overshadowed by scenes of chaos, including fans forcing their way into the stadium without tickets and overcrowding in several sections.
A review of Mookh, the official ticketing platform for CHAN fixtures, showed that only matches at Nyayo Stadium currently have tickets on sale. Unless the Kenya vs Zambia clash, scheduled for Sunday, August 17, is cleared for ticket sales, it risks being played behind closed doors with no fans allowed inside.
During the Morocco match, hundreds of supporters overpowered security personnel at one of the gates, storming into the stands in full view of cameras. Videos shared online captured the moment the crowd broke through, leaving stewards unable to contain the surge.
CAF has been tightening its stance on security lapses at Kasarani in recent months. The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) was previously fined around Ksh646,000—partially suspended—over incidents during the Kenya vs DR Congo game, and further sanctions followed breaches during the Kenya vs Angola fixture.
The DR Congo clash saw similar mayhem when fans overran stewards at Gate 11, sparking a dangerous stampede. Other violations included the lighting of illegal fires, a motorbike navigating through dense crowds, and both verbal and physical abuse directed at CAF officials. In one reported case, a CAF staff member was allegedly assaulted by a security officer.
For these repeated breaches, CAF slapped FKF with a Ksh2.5 million fine, underscoring its zero-tolerance approach to matchday security failures.
