Kenyan fans hoping to watch Harambee Stars take on Zambia in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Sunday have been advised to arrive at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, at least five hours before kick-off, according to the Local Organising Committee (LOC).
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 12, the LOC urged supporters to come early with their e-tickets ready on their mobile phones for swift verification. The directive follows chaotic scenes on Sunday, August 10, when some spectators gained entry without valid tickets.
The Committee also reminded fans to purchase tickets only from the authorised online vendor, emphasising that printed versions would not be accepted.
“Despite the unprecedented success on and off the field of play, we must address recent unfortunate incidents of crowd trouble that were seen in some of the matches at the Kasarani Stadium,” the statement read.
“To ensure the safety of all attendees and the smooth running and success of the tournament, you are encouraged to arrive at the stadium on Match Day at least five hours before kick-off, purchase match tickets only from the authorised online vendor and follow all security guidelines and instructions at all times,” it further directed.
According to LOC chairperson Nicholas Musonye, the measures aim to guarantee both safety and operational efficiency throughout the tournament. The disturbances on Sunday caused damage to the recently renovated facility, prompting the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to impose several sanctions.
These include restricting stadium capacity to 27,000 spectators—about 60 per cent of its total—allowing entry only to e-ticket holders, and directing the LOC and government to roll out a public awareness campaign on safety measures and entry rules.
CAF warned that failure to comply could lead to stricter penalties, including moving future matches to alternative venues outside Kenya.
In addition, the LOC revealed plans to set up ‘Official Fan Zones’ for supporters to watch the national team’s final group-stage clash with Zambia on Sunday, August 17.
“Details of these exciting Fan Zones will be shared shortly. Let us work together to ensure that Kenya continues to host major tournaments and showcase our passion for the game in the right way,” the Committee noted.
