The Ministry of Sports has announced the establishment of six official fan zones where supporters can watch the highly anticipated Kenya vs Zambia clash on Sunday, August 17.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, speaking on Wednesday, August 13, said the move is aimed at creating a safe, inclusive, and vibrant environment for football fans. “These fan zones will bring the stadium atmosphere closer to the people, while helping us manage attendance at Kasarani in line with CAF’s requirements,” he said.

The designated viewing areas include Uhuru Park, Lucky Summer – Ngomo area (behind Kasarani Stadium), Dandora Stadium, Utalii (Stima Club), Jacaranda Grounds, and Kibera DC Grounds.

This announcement comes in the wake of a Ksh6.4 million fine imposed on Kenya by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over security breaches during the Kenya vs Morocco match on Sunday, August 10.

In a statement, CAF confirmed its disciplinary board had held Kenya responsible for several safety violations during the match.

“The CAF Disciplinary Board charged the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) with multiple safety and security breaches during Kenya TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) match against Morocco at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The disciplinary board found Kenya guilty and imposed a fine of USD 50,000 (Ksh6.4million),” read the statement in part.

To avoid further sanctions, FKF is calling on fans to arrive early for the upcoming match. FKF President Hussein Mohammed, addressing a press conference on Tuesday, August 12, emphasized the importance of early attendance and outlined alternative viewing arrangements.

“I urge all Kenyans to turn up at least 5 hours earlier on match days with their digital tickets on their phones. We will set up an official fan zone for those who are unable to get the tickets from the official vendors,” he said.

Local Organising Committee (LOC) Chairman Nicolas Musonye stressed that strict ticket controls will be enforced to safeguard the integrity of the event.

“No one will access the stadium without a ticket. We will enforce by all means possible, because our reputation is at stake. Gates shall be opened at the right time so as things can run smoothly and minimize crowds outside the stadium,” he stated.
